According to a press release just sent out by Capcom which has just hit our inboxes, they have announced that a new mode called Versus will be released for their upcoming Resident Evil 5. This sounds like exciting news until you read deeper into the press release:
Tired of working together with other players in Resident Evil™ 5? Ready to show your co-op partner exactly what you think of their gaming abilities? Capcom is pleased to announce that a new multiplayer mode for the soon-to-be blockbuster, Resident Evil 5, will be released post-launch as paid digital content via Xbox LIVE and PlayStation Network. The new mode, called ‘Versus,’ adds a deadly twist to Resident Evil 5’s multiplayer, pitting players against each other in a contest of survival, a marked departure from the central co-operative nature of the game.
Versus allows up to four players to match wits in online battles across two very different game types. Slayer’s Rule is a point-based game that challenges players to kill Majinis. In Survivor’s Rule, players hunt the most dangerous game, each other! Players can begin the hunt as Chris, Sheva or other secret characters, and choose from either one-on-one or two-versus-two team matches for either of the two gameplay styles.
Versus will be available on Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network a few weeks after Resident Evil 5 is available. Versus will be available for 400 Microsoft Points on Xbox LIVE or $4.99 on the PlayStation Network. Versus mode requires the Resident Evil game software in order to be played. A broadband internet connection is required.
If you take a look at the bolded statement, you will clearly see that this new versus mode is going to be released as paid DLC. Just looking at the surface, one has to wonder why Capcom decided to release this post launch, not to mention the fact that you will have to pay for this. By charging consumers for content that is probably already on the disc, wouldn’t this splinter the userbase since it’s quite possible that many people won’t bother buying this at all? This goes to show that while the issue of downloadable content seems like a step in the right direction, developers are using it as an easy way out to push out features that our $60 should have bought in the first place.

this is exactly what the broke gamers have been talking about….
I won’t even be getting the game, let alone the DLC and I can guarantee that this mode will be complete trash….
you already know says you heard it here first…
I’m sold. It is definitely tacked on and doesn’t need to be there but it is a nice to have this option for people that will pay the extra 5 dollars to try it out.
Multiplayer modes with new trophies/achievements to add overall longetivity to the game. Why not. Awesome. This shouldn’t be bad news to anyone. Great the multiplayer is there and a nice add-on to the game.
AIM FOR THE HEAD! 9 Hours!
Capcom….bending one gamer over…one game at a time
ugh…what a waste. im losing respect from capcom slowly. people should put that 4.99 toward the capcom classic, Bionic Commando instead which is 14.99 of greatness. the way re5 plays doesnt even seem like it would be a fluid multiplayer game in the slightest way
I’ll tell you some that’s a “waste:”
watching ‘YourMomsnewVagina’ round after round,
getting his ass kicked by Mel in
Street Fighter IV™.
Total, complete and utter suckage.
What happened Joe?
You didn’t respond.
Smells like your vagina is showing.
Oooo…clever.
By the way Mista HNIC,
did you find north-east?
Sucker.
In general Resident Evil 5 is ok and the only reason I say that is because of the co-op. Reusing the Re 4 engine and not adding anything new makes the game fail epically. Definitely not a ” Resident Evil 5 or 4.5″ this news about a paid DLC just pushes the game farther into the ground. Spend if you want, I won’t.
