Infamous vs Prototype

Infamous vs Prototype

This is one of the more prominent arguments made between PS3 and XBOX 360 fans, the argument  whether or not there is little difference between the PS3 and 360 ceiling-wise or if the 360 is holding back the PS3 version of games due to the difference in storage capacity of Blu-ray being 25GB per layer and the 360 supporting DVD9 and only being able to use 7GB for the game while using 2GB of space on the disc for Copyright Protection which sounds like a big deal, so I‘m going to go over a few things to see if Prototype seems cheapened due to the disc capacity.

Now you have Sucker Punch and Radical Entertainment coming out with pretty much identical games with a different premise and the big deal here is that Infamous will be a PS3 exclusive and Prototype will come out on both systems.
This is where the questions begin. Will Infamous be able to separate itself from Prototype by the capacity of Blu-ray? Can Prototype compare to Infamous while only being on a DVD9? I can already tell you that Microsoft will not allow Prototype to be on more than one disc, because if so, then Sony “wins” and MS wants more than anything to prove that the difference in capacity between Blu-ray and DVD9 will not matter, so Infamous already has the potential upper-hand. My final question is will Prototype be better than Infamous in spite of the capacity differences between formats?

If you own a 360 and a PS3, then on paper you’d assume that Infamous is the way to go, but broke gamers want the best game for their money. As a “broke gamer” myself, I want to know the answer to these questions and I’m going to go over some of the things we currently know about these two games and which one looks more compelling.

similarities:

  • Both games support an open world environment.
  • Both games feature RPG elements where you can develop your abilities. Prototype calls this “evolution points”, Infamous doesn’t have a label for it to my knowledge.
  • The premise of both of these games start off with the main character not knowing how you got where you are and why.
  • Both games release in June 2009.

Prototype:

  • The main character Alex appears to be a vigilante who is fighting the government which is apparently behind the current predicament involving you and the city itself.
  • This game is clearly a gore-fest where people who are “infected” are the enemy and reminds me of the Resident Evil 5 zombies.
  • You are a shape-shifter which allows you to consume your enemies and includes absorbing their DNA, looks, abilities and memories which can also have a negative effect on your character.
  • The story revolves around a conspiracy where you have to absorb other people who are in the military that know what happened to you so that you can put the puzzle together.
  • While you can’t really climb anything, you can still jump rather high and fly for short periods of time depending on the limitations of your current abilities.
  • From the video’s available, you can operate a Tank or even jump on a moving Helicopter which doesn’t seem possible at all in Infamous.
  • Controls are rather basic and appears to be a button masher with one button being for attack, one button for charging up your powers, the left stick is to move, the right stick is for moving the camera while the right and left shoulder buttons are for aiming.

Infamous:

  • The main character’s name is Cole who has the powers of electricity based on a very super-hero/comic book type storyline.
  • You can use the electricity to shock someone back to life like a defibrillator, give power to objects around you as we’ve seen where he’s riding a train. You can throw balls of electricity or a blast to deflect sort of like what we’ve seen in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, but you have to keep juicing up your powers by stealing it from the objects in the environment around you. Not to mention that water hurts you, the game has taken the good/bad of your abilities and put it down to a science.
  • The open environment also allows you to climb pretty much anything and the game uses what seems to be a pretty convenient cover system to avoid your enemies. (think Uncharted: Drakes Fortune)
  • You can choose whether to be good or bad, your path relies on karma and how you use your powers as well as what you do with them.
  • From the video’s I‘ve seen, the AI seems to be a bit stronger in this title.
  • The enemies are a gang called the “reapers” who were a bunch of drug dealers before the event that occurred where you got your powers and are now a stronger force because they pretty much do the bidding for the other characters in the game who have powers like you do which feature them in the Boss fights.

All in all, it appears that Prototype seems more fun and Infamous seems more challenging. I don’t see anything yet that suggests that the difference between Blu-ray and DVD9 will hurt Prototype, but rather it just seems you are able to do more in Infamous as far as the gameplay goes.

I will say though, that Infamous seems to have elements from several other games, such as Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, GTA4 and Assassins Creed while Prototype seems to have elements of Resident Evil 5 because of the zombie-like enemies mixed with something else that is quite original with the shape-shifting abilities and power-stealing.

I do like the fact that you can acquire abilities to fly and also hop in a tank to take out enemies in Prototype and I am sort of getting the sense that both of these games will be killed by the hype machine that may let people down from their current expectations. There just seems to be an “Assassins Creed” or “Devil May Cry 4” type vibe from these two titles right now, but we shall find out soon.
