The lineup that the PlayStation 3 has set for 2009 looks amazing, everyone knows this because the PS3 fans won’t shut up about it, myself included. But nobody wants to talk about how the PS3 does this every year and only delivers on just a little over half of the exclusive titles originally promised.
So you’re probably asking yourself “What’s the Don getting at?”. I’ll tell you exactly, this will be The Don’s interpretation of what will realistically transpire over the next 8 months and so on for the PS3’s library. This is The Don’s guideline to the A-list exclusives that the PS3 has in store.
It appears that over the past few years that the PS3 has been in existence, there is always this amazing lineup of games slated to come out during the course of the year. Then you hear rumors teeter back and forth about the release dates which end up being pure speculation in hindsight.
I’m starting to wonder if the games they “expect” to release in the Fall really have “see you next year” written on them. Remember when White Knight Chronicles, Killzone 2, Final Fantasy XIII, Gran Turismo 5 and Infamous were slated for 2008 and then pushed back to 2009? Now 2009 seems quite optimistic for some of these titles at this point. Yet, while a lot of those games missed the boat, you still had Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet and Resistance 2 that all hit their mark without a hiccup.
Below, I will show a quick rundown as to what has transpired for some of the big titles for the PS3 in 2008.
- White Knight Chronicles – This title was released in Japan on December 31st and they announced the first week of January that they had already begun localizing the game for the rest of the world. It’s been 3 months and no word since then. This title pretty much screams “E3 Booth”, but I assumed this game would have had a release date by now.
- Killzone 2 – They were pretty good with this one, I actually liked the fact that they pushed this game back if it meant working out all the kinks that would have put this title in the Gears of War 2 category. However, this title missed the mark by about a good 4 months.
- Final Fantasy XIII – This one is anyone’s guess and has one half of the gaming world in an uproar and the other half has apparently lost interest at this point. But I bet you these are the same people that will buy this game day and date of the release.
- Gran Turismo 5 – Well, they gave us Prologue and have kept this one quiet for some time now. I fully expect there to be an E3 booth and release date for this game. Even if it’s not ready, I think they’ll throw in a patch or two and then some DLC like everyone else seems to be doing.
- Infamous – Apparently this game has multiple release dates lurking around. I keep hearing June and then I heard the 1st week of July. There is one thing we can guarantee on for this title, and that is a 2009 release date.
- Metal gear Solid 4 – An epic game that lived up to most of it’s hype and released when it was promised.
- LittleBigPlanet – This game was pushed back twice, I believe but it did release the year that it was slated for.
- Resistance 2 – While this game didn’t live up to the hype, it was still quite entertaining and it was released right on schedule.
Now we’re in the 2nd Quarter of 2009, four out of those eight titles have been released (five: if you count White Knight Chronicles in Japan). What I will do now is list some of the more popular, exclusive PlayStation 3 games slated for this year that are being hyped up for the 2nd half of 2009. This is where The Don’s deciphering skills will reveal exactly which games have a more realistic shot at being released this year and which one’s will be a 2010 release.
- Final Fantasy XIII – This game is starting to scream 2010 because there is so much development that still needs to be done before they even begin localizing this title. I don’t even know why I added it, because this title may not even be released outside of Japan until 2011.
- God of War III – Every God of war title has released in March, I think that the developers like saying that it will be released this year and it makes them feel all tingly inside, but in all reality I am going to temper my expectations here and say “March 2010″.
- Uncharted 2: Among Thieves – This game is slated for the 4th quarter and I can definitely see it coming out in November based on my gut, but logic tells me this will be a 1st quarter in 2010 title for the PS3. Based off what the trends have shown – yeah, but Naughty Dog definitely does have their act together and I think we can seriously expect this game to come out in 2009.
- Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 – This game is slated for the 4th Quarter and I believe it in this case because they are pretty much upgrading the graphics from the 360 version and adding certain things to an already stable game as it is…So it’s pretty safe to say this game will be available in 2009 at sometime!
- Heavy Rain – This game was buzzing around E3 last year and then the holidays and then evaporated. I could see an early 2010 release, but something tells me that with the unique approach they are taking with this game that they’ll push it out early and feature DLC. This just makes the most sense based on the trends I’ve seen thus far this generation.
- Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time – This is another game I expect to come out in 2009 because the Ratchet & Clank brand generally offers the same thing in every game, but it is quite fun and entertaining. Yet I don’t see it taking too much time for Insomniac to push this game out. Insomniac, much like Naughty Dog is among Sony’s reliable group of developer’s, so this is another expected 2009 title.
- MAG: Shadow War – This game just seems to be another FPS with a new gimmick that will entice many. I1st off, it has all kinds of explosions and 2nd, it boasts an online multiplayer mode that features 256 players! I expect this game to be ready by the end of this year, but it I wouldn’t be shocked if they pushed this one to 1st Quarter 2010 to avoid missing out on big money with all the other massive titles slated for the 4th Quarter.
- White Knight Chronicles – Please let there be something announced for E3! this game is complete and only needs to be localized. So my logic tells me…….that there will be a release date announced at E3. End of story.
Now, even after sounding extremely optimistic on most of these titles, I’ve listed 8 exclusives and I think we’ll be lucky to see 5 of these games in 2009.
I’m already counting out God of war III and Final Fantasy XIII, now here’s the tricky part, and that’s naming the games that are most likely to be released this year. I’ll start this off with White Knight Chronicles, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time and Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2.
That’s three games I think we can safely say will come out in 2009. The three remaining games are Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Heavy Rain and MAG: Shadow War, now as a fan I am hoping it is Uncharted 2 and based on the developer for that game being Naughty Dog, I think I can safely say this game will come out this year.
The problem is, can we expect Heavy rain and/or MAG: Shadow War to join the 2009 lineup? Only time will tell.

well, I mean I’ve seen 360 fans make way worse lists out of nothing….he does mention some pretty enticing titles, but I don’t expect any of them to be released this year except for Fat Princess which is already slated for around June along with Infamous and June is pretty much in the safe zone right now and doesn’t need to be mentioned…
Mars will be next year and I don’t see DC Universe coming out until next year as well, but I could be proven wrong there…
Wardevil looks good, I think I just flat out missed that one on my list because I heard about that in 2008…
and I wanted to mention the new Twisted Metal game, but they haven’t even announced that one….

This is a very interesting article though personally I think that god of war 3 will be out by the end of 2009, and I believe the reason to be that Sony doesn’t want to announce it until e3 is so that they will make the biggest splash in the e3 pool.
I have the utmost faith that Naughty Dog will make the deadline for the release of uncharted 2.
Ratchet and clank will most definitely be out on schedule.
I think that MAG will not be out by the end of the year but it will be out early next year.

I find that funny, since whenever I see the 5 biggest 360 games for 2009, I see an expansion pack (Halo 3: ODST, Bungie even said it’s not a full game), and I see DLC (Lost and Damned). Hypocritical fanboys.
Anyway, there hasn’t been any in-game footage of MAG, and you’re claiming it to be a generic FPS. It’s not even confirmed to be an FPS (From the screenshots it looks like it, but there’s a huge possibility it will be both first and third person, like the previous SOCOMs they made). Quit ignorantly assuming every game with guns is another generic first-person shooter.

1. i dont give a flying fuck as to which console is better. ive heard that the ps3 and 360 are about the same in power but ive also heard that ps3 is 3 times as powerful. id agree with 3 times as powerful.
2. no u cant count xbox and pc games as xbox exclusive.
3. most xbox games come to PC because xbox is basically a PC so its easy to program and viceversa.
4. Im an xbox guy, probably will nvr buy a ps3 unless i feel like bluray is the future but i think that digital distribution is already starting to make bluray obsolete unless consoles decide to stay with diskx 9probably 4 a couple of generations.)
5. i dont find ANY PS3 exclusives worth the console. there all bland and either FPS or platform (or atleast the ones i would ever think of buying) xbox atleast has a noticeable colorful variety (still cant believe that theyve got more JRPG’s than ps3… i think../.idk)

back on the topic at hand. i don’t think god of war 3 or FF13 will come out this year, and im very skeptical about MAG. but i get the feeling the rest of them will come out. like you said, naughty dog and insomniac are very reliable, so i have no doubt their games will release. and inFamous just looks like its almost done and ready for a summer release. white knight, definitely localized 09. Heavy rain, i just dont know. im guessing Q4 09. it might get pushed to 2010, but i dont think so. dont really care though, im not interested in that one. and of course there are some you didnt mention, like Quantum Theory, which may or may not come this year i have no idea but its worth noting i think.
all in all, regardless of if a few of the games get pushed back, this is still a great lineup for ps3, as always IMO.

Wow, where on earth did you get that info from? According to the latest interviews with Kitase (producer) he stated that localization had already begun and that the gap won’t be larger than six months between the two versions, so early summer of 2010 at the latest is probably a more accurate guess for the NA/EU version. they’ve also stated that the designers are almost completely finished and that what they’re focusing on up ahead is to fit all the different chunks of the game together into one unity. I can’t see that it would take them more than six months to do that. So FFXIII is rightfully added to the list of 2009 releases… if you live in japan:P

Can’t say I’m getting too eacited over them releases. Some of the ones I’m looking forward to are Dirt 2, F1 2009 (both of these are by Codemasters), Gran Turismo 5 (can see that slipping into 2010), Yakuza 3, Doom 4, Max Payne 3…

Talking Final Fantasy series, the ps3 is getting Final Fantasy XIII as well as the 360, but the PS3 is getting an exclusive Final Fantasy XIII: Versus, which, as articles speculate, is a completely different game, with a completely different story, with completely different characters set on a completely different planet that’s only similarity with the original Final Fantasy XIII is that both games events will be happening in the same** time frame, can’t wait for that, aside from God of War III, its the game I’m looking forward to the most.

im so sick if hearing “the 360 has the best games ever” from you 360 fanboys. im an ex-xbox owner and will never own another one again. you people talk about “oh we have alot of great games” you also have alot of crap games. anyone remember “over g fighters” or “chromehounds”? what big names does the 360 have? and please dont say halo because thats a kiddy game in my opinion. i may be a PS3 fanboy and im proud of the fact. we have alot more BIG name titles that sony didnt HAVE to pay a large sum of money to make exclucive. some examples, killzone 2, resistance 2, warhawk, socom. the list goes on and on.
So many of the titles was released in ‘08. considering sony still announced 130 ps2 games for ‘08, playstation 3 is slowly getting there in the c/war against the other consoles. having the games is one thing, but with the credit crunch they need to do better prices on ps3 consoles as well.
I’ll admit that I didn’t even read past the first paragraph b/c I already knew where it was going and didn’t feel the need to waste my time. Have fun playing nothing on the 360 (except for exclusive DLC woopty-fuckin’-doo) while I play all the great exclusives on my PS3. I also have a 360, but the only games I care about that are on the horizon are ODST, Alan Wake (if it ever comes out) and Mass Effect 2… also MS has no first-party development so the future is always going to be brighter for Sony and Nintendo b/c they actually make some high-quality games in house. MS only advantage is price and they won’t have it forever and in this economy they won’t be able to continue buying exclusives from third-party developers.

honestly there are soo many triple A list games for the ps3 this year that it will possibly gain 3/4 of the ground made by the xbox. Xbot fanboys please remember you system came out a year before the ps3 did AND at least 1/4 of the purchases since summer of 2007 have been xbox players buying new ones because their old ones broke down. Just keep that in mind. Also there are some huge titles missing from this article.
i’m not a fanboy for XBOX but lets be real 360 has better games than the ps3 and yes they both have crapy games too but bottom line is if u compare exclusives gears is funner than resistance, killzone was great but halo is still funner, and yes these are the flagship titles for both but i don’t think the ps3 sucks by any means its got great games its just 360’s are more fun
theres only one thing i hate about the ps3.
the controller feels aquard in your hand compaer to the 360 controller fits like a glove.
that and the battery in my ps3 controller lasts half as long as the AA batterys in the 360 controller.
wich is pathetic concidering the ps3 controller has a lithium ion battery wich are supose to last ALOT longer than AA batterys.
