As most of you know, Infamous has had it’s release date fluctuating between this June and someone even once said July and then that went right back to June after a couple of days. All along, I knew that this was positioning because of the rival game called Prototype that releases for both systems.
At first glance, Prototype reminds me a lot like Infamous with the way the game was laid out. With all of the things you can do with your powers in a very comic-esque setting, and how you have to save the world from destruction after waking up with these unique powers.
These two titles appear to rival each other in a way that I don’t see it panning out well for the sales of either game in the short-term. But after looking deeper, these two games have very stark differences in storyline and how you gain your powers along with what you can do with them.
Anyways, I’ve already covered both games enough in my Infamous vs Prototype article from a month ago. This was right around the time that the release dates were nothing more than constant rumors swirling around, as Sucker Punch and Radical Entertainment were both posturing against each other for the better release date.
About a week ago or so, Prototype finally received it’s release date of June 9th, while Sucker Punch still played it cool with Infamous, so Radical Entertainment obviously had to stand by that date as it was.
Now, Infamous has a release date of May 26th with the demo hitting the PSN on May 21st and now I see a lot of people asking the question “Are they releasing the game early so they can push DLC?”.
That all depends, because they already have unlockable powers if you reserve your copy at GameStop. I’m guessing this is a code to unlock the power to light up an electronic billboard promoting GameStop while the world is in a time of crisis (in the game, of course). This is almost a hint that they will be updating the PSN store after a week or so with new abilities that you can download. Other than that, I doubt there will be DLC for anything else aside from alternative attire which isn’t necessary anyways, and I’ll likely not purchase DLC regardless of what it is.
Also, it appears that Prototype was pushed up rather than Infamous, because, from what I’ve seen it seems like the typical game where you kill an enemy, absorb whatever is left and then power up…then use your powers to kill more people and then change it up again. (wash, rinse, cycle, repeat)
I can definitely say that taking over a Tank or physically wrecking a Helicopter will be fun, along with the other things you can do with your powers. But this game seems to be lacking the depth that I’ve seen from Infamous as far as game play goes, and I think these two games don’t even compare.
Regardless, both of these games will be coming out two weeks apart and that means more games for me to choose from.
To put it simply: The Don guarantees Infamous DLC and/or a Patch will arrive before Prototype is even released. However, I don’t assume that the DLC would have made a difference in the final product, as I feel that Sucker Punch has had this one wrapped up for quite some time, aside from a few touch ups here and there.

Hmmm interesting theory dude… however it’s worth remembering that some sony exclusives have previously done the “special downloadable thingamebob” (eg. special weapon skin for resistance 2 collector’s edition) without having said items available as DLC (and R2 only got dlc a week or two or go, a good four and a bit months after it came out). Then again, LBP had DLC in-game costumes as a preorder exclusive and unbelievably that was a sign of things to come! So indeed you may be right, could go either way.
Agree about prototype looking a little less varied than infamous… that recent video of infamous showing the protagonist gliding through the air, grinding along a power line, dive-bombing onto a bus and then electrocuting the bus driver looked flippin’ great, and the way he was fluidly stringing the moves together almost reminded me of tony hawk’s pro skater series (back when hawk was exciting and fresh, and not an obnoxious cash cow…). It looks like you even rack up experience points multipliers for combos in infamous, that’s an awesome hawk-like spin on rpg mechanics. There also appears to be more variety to the powers, yet at the same time they seem a little more cohesive (given their adherence to an electricity theme), whereas the prototype super powers are a bit all over the place. And apparently we’ve only seen a small portion of what’s on offer in infamous, which is pretty promising.
Prototype looks a little more accomplished graphically however: higher res textures, better lighting and slightly less ridiculous animation. It has to be said that neither of the games is exactly top tier visually however, so I suppose this isn’t such an area of competition here… as always, gameplay reigns supreme, and on this front I’m currently a little more enthused about what i’ve seen from infamous (solely going by what i’ve seen in the vids – obviously it’s far too early to draw a definite conclusion!). Sure, the voice acting is kinda bad and the karma system seems kinda trite, but who the fuck plays videogames for the dialogue or moral conundrums? Electricity grenades for the win baby.
Thanks for the well thought out comment Kadare,
I wasn’t necessarily saying that the content you would get from reserving a copy of the game would be available for DLC, but rather a sign of things to come especially when I saw screen caps of the game that showed a wardrobe and the lightning changing it’s color to red…
and also, in some ways, I like the Infamous graphics a little better than Prototype as there just seems to be more going on and the framerate seems to hold up well during gameplay videos….
while on Prototype, it appears to be a narrowed down environment with only so much going on in the grand scale of things, but rather hectic in a smaller area…
but like I said, thanks for the response, for it being the only response I had I’m glad it wasn’t someone going on about the console war in an article that mentions nothing of it…again ahaha
