HD remixes are breathing new life in old games and allowing companies to still make money off them, which is a good thing as long as they keep the price point moderate. This list that I have compiled is a list of older games dating back to two generations ago and prior to that.
The reason that I have excluded last generation is because for one, those games already look good enough to just be ported over until we hit next gen where they could update them then. Not to mention that this list would be much harder to make, I want to focus on which games would make for a great HD Remix.
Some of these games won’t see an HD Remix until next generation, because I have included Nintendo games in my list.
So without further adieu…
10 Games that need an HD remix…
10. X- MEN Arcade (Arcade)

This is the game that made me start the list, after seeing Turtles in Time with a spankin’ new HD Remix, I definitely started thinking of games that “need” this done. Konami has to step up to the plate here and bring this game to XBL and PSN, HD Remix and all. This was one of the two arcade games that I played as a kid and actually beat, and the 4 player co-op would be a great purchase here.
9. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)

After seeing what was done with Bionic Commando: Re-Armed, I definitely could use more 2D side-scrolling HD, and what better game to get it than one of the best 2D games of all time? This game was a classic on the NES and if Nintendo were to make the HD leap with the Wii2, this game would generate all kinds of money for Nintendo. People who could re-experience this game would love it as well as kids in this generation that haven’t played it yet.
8. Super Metroid (SNES)

Another 2D classic here from Nintendo, this time from the Super NES and who else wouldn’t want to see Mother Brain in HD!? If Nintendo pushed HD into a Wii2 and started to remix old games, I would not even think twice about double dipping on so many classics…like this one.
7. Contra (NES)

yes, another old Nintendo side-scroller, but don’t worry, this is the last one…I swear!. After watching LittleBigPlanet videos and seeing that people have actually taken the time to re-create Contra levels, I went right out and purchased the game. There definitely is a market out there for re-vamped classics and this is yet, another must buy.
6. Golden Eye 007 (N64)

This is the game that revolutionized the multiplayer mode in shooters. We used to play this game to no end and I think the gameplay still holds up to the games in this generation, not to mention the single player mode which was great as well. HD Remix this one, and my money’s yours. Period.
5. Resident Evil (PSOne)

The very first game that ever gave me nightmares, and yes, I was scared to play it after midnight. The very first Resident Evil is still my favorite, because I felt this is the only Resident Evil title that stayed true to the horror aspect of gaming. True horror is still a rare thing to see ’til this day aside from games like Dead Space, and adding HD graphics to this one would be another way Capcom could drain my money from out my pocket.
4. Metal Gear Solid (PSOne)

Another classic title here, the game that started a series that has a cult-like following that took the whole espionage angle to gaming and kicked it to the next level. I’m not sure if this game could be considered to have 2.5D graphics, but they definitely took the 2D realm and pushed it a little bit. This game is another title that Konami needs to HD Remix and plug it to the PSN for easy money.
3. Final Fantasy VII (PSOne)

Personally, I’m already sick of hearing about this game, but this would be easy money for Square Enix to finish what they teased us all with back in 2005. They showed a demonstration of what the PS3 can do graphically, but out of all the games, they really had to use this game? There could really be fire to this smoke, but I’m not holding my breath because of the fact that they have already re-released this title in Japan and it’s coming to the rest of the world sometime this year. Too bad PSOne graphics look horrible on my HD set.
Super Mario 64 (N64)
![]()
11 years after releasing the first game in the series, Nintendo revolutionized the 3D realm with this classic title, making it the best game in the series. On top of remixing the game, I think that they should implement the DS version with all of the characters. I’m not sure if that is an entirely different version, but I just want to see Luigi and Yoshi in this game, and not Yoshi by himself, but rather as a character you can ride.
1. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)

In what might be the best game of all time in some people’s eyes, this title was definitely one of the hardest. Nintendo took this series to the next level, just as they did with Super Mario 64 and I was never able to beat this game to save my life. While it was one of the harder games in the post 2D realm, it is still a bonafide classic and Nintendo could very well dominate two generations in a row if they decided to HD Remix some of the classics on this list. Starting with this one.
Honorable Mentions:
Any other Super Mario Bros., Zelda or castlevania Game (except Castlevania: The Adventure) as well as Resident Evil 2, Megaman 2 and Double Dragon.

I agree with this article. I strongly support HD remixes. 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit video games are not meant to be played on an HDTV set. Some of the other honorable mentions for HD remixes are Star Fox 64, Blaster Master, Vigilante 8, Mega Man 3-6, Mega Man X2&3, Breath of Fire 1-4, The Magic of Scheherazade, ActRaiser, Soul Blazer, Bahamut Lagoon, and Final Fantasy I&II. I suggest that the sidescrolling Super Mario Bros. games be remade in 1080p 2.5D graphics. Aside from those listed above, they would include Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2, and Super Mario World. The Castlevania games that should be remade in 1080p 2.5D graphics include the original Castlevania, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, Castlevania: Bloodlines, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
definitely, the list is almost infinite…especially when you consider all the Mario, Mega Man and Final Fantasy games…and Star Fox 64 was a game that I mentioned about completely forgetting after I did the article and should have probably made the list…
thanks for the response and don’t be a stranger!
This is a fantastic list, I whole-heartedly agree. You named everything I’d want to see (especially OoT) except I’d probably put Killer Instinct in there too since I’m still waiting to play some kind of arcade port (not N64 lol).
Oh, RE got a facelift with a REmake on the Gamecube so I’m not really hankering for a HD RE1. Silent Hill Shattered Memories is coming out; it looks a fair bit different than SH1 on the PS1, which I’d like to see done HD.
Great article man!
You already can play HD versions of N64 games on your PC. Go to:
emutalk.net > 1964 > High resolution textures projects
They have both photo-realistic and cell shaded HD versions of Golden Eye, Mario 64, Zelda OoT, Castlevania Dark Legacy, etc…
