So now that the Heavy rain game play trailers have been released, we’ve been able to see what all the buzz was about that has been circulating for over a year now.
It’s pretty safe to say that the game is based on quick-time events and a great video game storyline, however if this were a movie, I would say that I wouldn’t see it based on what I’ve seen thus far. But for a video game? the storyline looks epic and looks to be right up there with Metal Gear Solid 4.
The game play manipulating the storyline seems to be what SEGA was trying to do back in the mid 90’s. The game play reminds me somewhat of games like ::shudders:: Night Trap, except this game keeps going on even after you die or fail, and it’s not an abomination to gaming either. I wonder if the creators of the God of War series knew what they were creating when they added quick-time events into the game play, now games are starting to be based on them.
Regardless, Heavy Rain is another game showing the face of this generation, not only will you be playing games, but you’ll experience them as well as be entertained. I just wonder if the game is sacrificing the game play too much in favor of the creative storyline. The cheesy acting alone is enough for me to want to buy this game, along with the forced swearing by the characters and the apparent “condition” your character has. there’s nothing redundant about that, not at all…nothing like say, Metal Gear Solid 4, nope.
I’m just curious to see if I’d be willing to play this game more than once just to see the variations that the storyline has, or if I’ll just play it through once and move on like I normally do. Overall, the game play footage has finally shown us exactly what to expect from this game and it definitely does not disappoint.
Overall, I can’t wait to play this game, but even more-so I can’t wait to see all the copycat games that come out trying to do what this one does. Let’s say the entire game is based on quick-time events, then that can easily be improved on. Then comes the storyline as well because you can always find better voice actors than what I’ve heard from the game thus far.

I have a feeling this game will get a 8 or 9/10
It’s always the replayability man!
Sure it’s good to replay a campaign, but some levels in the campaign are deeply hated.
As long as they feed us downloadable content like Ninja Gaiden’s Hurricane Pack. Then this game might as well get a 9 or 10/10
from the vids it looks like that, but remember you can do the junkyard scene without the QTE sequence Vs Mad Jack. There will always be the context based inputs like putting on the shades, door handle, the scene when he’s going into the crusher and fumbling for the gun,but if you do the sequence were your asked to input buttons to get his drugs out,you would change the scene, and the story, and that’s why I love what I’ve seen so far.
preciate the replies so far…
everything I’ve seen from the videos look great and the fact that the game has several ways to play out is amazing…
hopefully there is more to the gameplay than just quick-time events though…
I don’t agree with you at all. It’s way too early to say that the game is based on quick time events.
All we have seen is one action scene where quick time events are required. I’ve heard the game is about choices and can range from 4 to 12 hours in length. I don’t see 12 hours of quick time events. Not even Indigo Prophecy was like that.
No, I don’t think it’s safe to say the game is based on quick times events. If that’s what safe means to you, I wouldn’t want you as my safety manager. Or anything else for that matter.
And I don’t think Heavy Rain, is inspired by God of War. This same developer used quick time events in their previous game Indigo Prophecy and that was released before God of War. So that should just give you an idea of how wacky your assumptions are.
You’re a total amateur, and it’s people like giving game journalism a bad name. I guess that’s what happens when just anyone can write some bullsh*t and post it on the internet.
You spoke the words right out of my mouth.
@Lorenzferus:
That’s what I’m talking about.
lol@lorenzferus, thanks for the reply
you definitely stretched quite a few things like “heavy rain being inspired by god of war”…..the point was that god of war started quick-time events and heavy rain has made a game where the action sequences are based on that..
and actually in an earlier interview, they said you would see a lot of quick-time events….so while the regular “walking around scenes” would be whatever…the action scenes are quick-time based and I think it’s pretty obvious at this point from what they are going for with this game….
ps: I <3 N4G
I’m pretty sure as far as quick time events go, that shenmue was the first game to implement them, and if not, it definetly wasn’t god of war or indigo. I don’t mean to come off as a smart ass or anything, but I feel shenmue derserves the credit.
Yeah I think Shenmue was the first game with QTE.
B said, “Yeah I think Shenmue was the first game with QTE.”
Actually… I think the “first game with QTE” crown probably goes to Dragon’s Lair… considering it was almost entirely QTE… and it came out in 1983.
Like Brad said, the first QTE came out in 1483 (give or take a couple hundred years)! That’s about 526 years ago!!! Which is exactly why I avoid such games.
Brad, sure Dragon Lair may be the first game to use QTE. But Shenmue revolutionised it and was used in the correct way it was meant to!
I mean, you are playing a Side Scroller, a cutscene appears, something happens and immediately it tells you to press a button! Hence the name Quick Time Event. Dragon Lair pretty much used the QTE through out.
This was the fun factor. A lot of newier games are starting to have QTE, and I can’t believe people really hate QTE’s now:/
I loved fahrenheit (indigo prophecy), but I only played thru it once.
I am really interested in how this game turns out, but what I’ve seen so far isn’t getting me hyped.
Wow. Just what everyone needed. Night Trap for a new generation.
lol dcbronco….it looks to be a lot better than night trap….but as far as your choices changing the outcome of things and choosing different options to get to your goal as in trapping in different rooms etc.
of course comparing it to night trap makes it sound like I’m shitting on the game when I actually liked the trailers ahaha…
If Heavy Rain has a ninja jerking off in the shower to a scantily clad female…then proceeded by 2 more ninjas coming in the bathroom with their gangrape drill…then its a first day purchase.
The morwe I hear about this game, the more excited I get. Are you guys going to be demoing it at E3?
