UFC 2009 Undisputed Review

UFC 2009 Undisputed Review

It’s no secret that I enjoy my Mixed Martial Arts and for all fans of the sport, I rate this game as a Must Buy.

It is obvious that Yukes’ priority with this game was to get the game play right. Using the right stick for grappling will seem alien to begin with, but you’ll soon be at one with the human transition from buttons to right stick, as the player transitions on screen.

The 6 fighting disciplines may seem superficial to begin with, but with practice you will find that they are distinctly different with exclusive maneuvers.

The real beauty of MMA is brought out in this game from the simple fact that no one fighter is the definitive one to choose.

Yukes were so concerned about the game play that due to clipping issues, Rich Franklin, normally southpaw (left-handed), fights orthodox (right-handed) and Clay Guida was dropped from the game because of his long hair. I was looking forward to playing as “The Carpenter”, but can forgive his exclusion because the gameplay is the most important thing.

Playing with a friend is exactly what I hoped for, each fight can play out differently depending on your willingness to change strategy.

Where Yukes cut corners was in the presentation of the game. High profile fighters look great, with high graphical detail and signature gestures, but lower level fighters lack such attention. One of my favourites, Houston Alexander, is physically represented well, you can tell the bone structure is correct, but detail on his facial skin is lacking.

The most disappointed aspect of the game is in the online. Lag disrupts most matches, from minor to major and a lack of customization means you can’t limit opponents to those close by.

Ranked matches are sickeningly plagued by cheaters. I was involved in an epic battle that went the distance, upon the judges decision awarding me the match unanimously, I was informed the connection was lost and the match would not count. The worst thing is that I won the match, the computer knew that, and yet a connection error voids it.

Don’t let this put you off, there are still plenty of fighters out there willing to fight fare. One fight I had went to the third round, with me getting knocked out. It was an awesome fight. When you get an opponent that will challenge you, you will not feel more pleased with your chance to be an MMA fighter in the UFC.

The simple workings of the career mode and limited number of classic fights is likely to only hold the attention of fans because of there interest in the sport. Like all sports games, an interest in the sport is helpful. For non-fans, this game offers a good opportunity to learn what MMA is about and it’s a definite Rent.

Vice Verdict: Fans – Must Buy! Non-fans – Rent and then you will become a fan!
