Wet: Hands On

Wet: Hands On

Wet is a new game by Artificial Mind and Movement and published by Bethesda that features the main character Rubi who for now doesn’t have a clear back story as the game is still in the pre-Alpha stages. The visual style of the game is inspired by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarintino’s Grind House double feature and as such features the old school movie film grain which is masterfully done as you’re able to choose to play with that as intend by the designers or turn it off if its not to your liking. Throughout the demo you’re given access to Rubi’s basic acrobatic movements such as sliding on her knees while shooting, jumping and wall running.

According to the developer you’re able to gain more acrobatic movements through a point system that rewards you with more points based on just how stylish you can make your kills including shifting the camera angle, sliding, jumping, wall running, shooting while sliding down ladders just to name a few options. Rubi is equipped with two pistols and a katana that are also upgradable by using the same points system that allows you to purchase new acrobatic movements. This all seems standard of what seems to be almost a beautiful blend of Max Payne and Devil May Cry, but what sets this game apart from other action games is the innovation in quick-time events. For one thing the quick-time events are not limited to   so at any point in the game you have to be on guard.

Not only are you more on edge while playing the game which truly does serve to keep the adrenaline flowing you’re still able to play in the duration of these quick-time events, so the game never takes itself out of your hands for too long. Unfortunately with all those positives however comes a few negatives. The walking controls are pretty wonky while fighting enemies at times, which makes the game feel just a tad bit loose and a little clunky, also the aiming system is completely manual which is fine but combined with poor collision detection you have a problem. However these few problems are completely forgiven by the fact that the game is still in pre-alpha as I said earlier. All in all if the developers can get the kinks worked out this game is set to be a sleeper competitor to what many people consider to be one of the best shown games of E3 2009 in Bayonetta. With an innovative visual style and over the top action that puts some action movies to shame and only a few pre-alpha snags this game could be one to look out for in the coming months, as of now no release date is confirmed.
