This year’s E3 was the first for Gaming Vice and as such we much like many other fans expected the big 3 to dominate with their exclusives but we were surprised to find out we were incorrect.Sony’s exclusives were already announced and not at all innovative. Microsoft’s were mainly sequels and the ever so popular Halo 3 expansion fall in the same group as Sony’s for lack of originality. We come now to Nintendo and honestly, all they had to offer was more exercising software and the same Big N franchises, hype has surrounded the Team Ninja Metroid project but there’s so little game play in the teaser that honestly I can’t even say I’m excited yet However there were quite a few original IPs, under the radar games, and innovative titles that stole the show a few of which I’ll describe.
The King of Fighters XII- If you liked Street Fighter 4 earlier this year, then you’ll enjoy The King of Fighters XII even more if you give it the chance. Passing the Ignition booth it was a bit of a task to not play this game as the fun factor was through the roof. With more interesting character designs and some new gameplay elements that truly spark the imagination such as the Critical Counter that allows you to create custom combos if you can pull it off. The only problem with this title is that you’ll be playing a little longer before you can go at the pros, but with a game this well made you’ll be thanking SNK and Ignition for the learning curve.
Muramasa: The Demon Blade- A Wii game as one of the best of E3 on GamingVice.net? Yes you are reading correctly. This game does everything that Odin Sphere failed to do and if you listen to Vice Weekly you know how much I disliked Odin Sphere.Muramasa focuses far more on the action elements more than the RPG elements. The game focuses on and rewards you for being able to combo the techniques they give you throughout the game.Muramasa truly reminds me of old school arcade beat-em-ups like Final Fight or Streets of Rage. The only problem with the game is that there is no multi-player mode in a game that features two main characters. One can only hope for a sequel in which Co-op will be the main focus of the game.
Quantum- A new IP from Tecmo that’s 2 parts Gears of War, 2 parts Ninja Gaiden, and a dash of Ico. Is the unoriginality a problem? Not at all, as those are three of my favorite IPs. With Gears’ cover system and grizzly gore, Ninja Gaiden’s style, flash, and similar take on women, with Ico’s use of another character as a problem solver, you can’t go wrong. Quantum features a gritty world with a main character who weilds a gun and a metal fist and his female partner who’s used to solve puzzles and help you out in combat, unfortunately at the moment there’s no Co-op but the game is only 40% complete according to the developer so who knows when the game finally reaches beta and pre-release stages.
Wet- Movie grain visuals, stylized action, but what sets this title apart from the rest is how masterfully Artificial Mind and Movement have re-defined quick-time events, by allowing you not only to play during quick-time events, but have them not just limited to cutscenes but gameplay as well. Combine that with some pretty sweet controls for a game that’s in the pre-alpha stages of development and I think we’ve got a great game on our hands.
