In the generation of the copycat where you have Sony and Microsoft stealing ideas from one another and making them better, now you have both of them copying something that Nintendo came with first. Motion Sensing has been quite the fad for the Nintendo Wii and regardless of the fact that Sony had the idea patented before the Wii was even conjured, Nintendo still brought the idea to the market first.
But hold on, Microsoft might have taken the idea to a new realm of copying and created something brand new altogether that could very well sell systems. Natal isn’t just motion sensing technology, because if it was then I would say that Sony had the upper hand with the EyeToy integration.
Project Natal has shown something brand new with the voice recognition which can revolutionize the way we operate our consoles, here is 5 ways that Natal will revolutionize the way we operate our consoles.
- Turning your console on – Imagine having a key phrase you used for turning your console on? This would one up the Bluetooth technology that has made PlayStation 3 peripherals so sexy and easy to use. You hit the PS button, your PS3 turns on and you’re ready to go. Imagine you used a word like…”Natal” as your pass-code to turn your console on and that did it, it’s the ultimate lazy man’s dream and it definitely one-up’s the sexiness of Bluetooth.
- Playing Games – You can use the motion sensing to play whatever game as well as the voice recognition to manage things verbally that would pretty much require less button’s and allow you to focus on your movement more in games that require this sort of action.
- Web Browsing – Now, this one can be tricky and you could very well have to spell out your words, but it beats typing them out with a keyboard that you would have to purchase separately and would be a very convenient step into the next generation. On top of that, the motion controls can be a mouse, so you just point, click and talk….you can’t beat that.
- Music – Imagine going into your music library on your console and listening to your favorite song by just saying the name. Top that with even saying stop, pause, shuffle etc. and it eliminates having to use a remote altogether except for the gaming aspect.
- Movie Playback – The same idea that was covered in the music area except using it with your movie library and just managing the content on your hard-drive space.
Overall, I think that Natal will revolutionize the way we operate our consoles and is a step forward with motion sensing technology while evolving it as well. The only question I have left is “How long until Nintendo or Sony copies this idea and add’s it to their arsenal?” Sony, you’re on the clock.

Dude this is the second time I have come to this webstie from N4G.com.
I cant rad anything you have posted because its all brown, forgive me for my lazyness to change the color or even drag my mouse over your text so it turns white so that I can read it.
Check your shit brother because you suck at posting anything.
Yea my spelling aint up to date either but at leat I can read it……
Brown = poo
seriously… this is total rubbish and i want my 30 seconds back (so ill spend another 30 correcting this dribble).
– motion control has been out at market for 3 years on Wii
– the DS has had voice recognition and commands in games for longer than i can care to confirm
– the wii lets u turn on and off the console with the power button on the wiimote aswell with blutooth (its not that fancy 3 yrs on).
– u mention its no good for typing but then say its great, which you follow up with stating they should invent a mouse. Its called the infared pointer on the wiimote which already is used to surf the web.
– wat has microsoft ever done first? they buy / borrow / steal every great idea theyve ever had. xbox live is only good because theyve had 15 years in the internet realm.
when microsoft makes a console that lasts longer than 12 months before it gets a fatal error of some kind ill spend another $200 on top of that to get this natal thing that still wont be out for another year…
end rant
I got 2 reasons why it wont.
1. It wont ever come out
2. if it does it wont be what it was shown as.
Voice recognition for controlling music? or movies? yeah, real smart. Every time an artist or actor says the word stop everything shuts down…
aww man, does this mean I have to retire already?…
Holy hell this is the worst piece of rubbish I’ve ever seen. Keyword to turn on your machine? Slightly better than the PS button, fine, but it would require the machine to be *constantly on and processing all sound waiting for that word*. Not a good thing, will cost tons of money in power usage and shorten the (already short) 360 lifetime significantly.
Web browsing? Hahahahaha. And what is with making music/movies two separate things? That desperate for content, eh?
If this is the revolution, I’ll be staying at home. Yeesh. Try harder next time. Note that 4 of your 5 items could already be done today on a computer if someone thought any of it was worthwhile at all. All you need is a $5 microphone…
revolutionize by turning a console on???!!!!! are u serious? this entire article is nonsense you tool.
I knew I had my work cut out for me by posting an article that favored the 360 on N4G…
…drats…I was desperate for content…..even though music and movies are two different aspects of using your console….
I guess more people need the coke bottles.
DUDE, you must be like 12. I couldve wrote this! You are a garbage writer, that is too in your ass about natal to actually think that halve this stuff could be done already.
- voice on system(retarted, requires a constant powered on system)
-web??on 360?….moving on
-music(interrupt your jam just to rewind??no.)
-movies(*playing around with you gf while watching a movie and she yells “stop”* what would happen….??)
games- ok from your spot to your couch to your tv is like 3-4 steps, COD requires more than 3-4 steps. You cant even back up! its garbage!)
-ending?never write an article again in your life. mkay?
Most of the things you talked about is voice recognition, this has been around for years and can easily be adapted by any of the console makers.
Man most of the reasons you gave are weak. I’m sure Natal will quite cool for some causal games and handling menu systems but like sony says it does suffer from depth on the z axis. Its cool if your just static and standing but wants you want to walk around then you need a controller
alright, I appreciate the responses from the readers even though it appears all of you are pissed off from the article ahaha…that’s cool..
but, you have to realize how consoles have become entertainment devices and now it appears that Natal is pretty much the XBOX 720 and the only way that Sony can 1-up Microsoft in this regard is if the PS3 would be able to offer comparable features without forcing people to buy a new console…
Not to mention that the reasons I gave actually do revolutionize the way we operate our consoles because you take away the physical aspect of gaming and create everything in the virtual world…
I realize that this is a PS3 fanboy den….hell, even I only own a PS3 but I can also recognize how big this announcement is and I didn’t realize at first that natal would be treated as a new console rather than just a peripheral…
This stems back to a podcast that we did with Vice Weekly where myself and I think Colton said that Microsoft is working on a new console and that is why you’re not hearing too much about new games…
oh…and be sure to check out the podcast…
Dude, any of that stuff you just mentioned can be done on PS3 with a simple firmware update. No need to bring out another console. Compare a PS3 from 2006 to one now. There is obviously a big difference.
I really don’t understand why Natal is being brought into light as this big thing, when this sort of technology was done years ago with the Eye Toy. The PSEye can come out with something similar to something Natal does, it’s that simple. Natal won’t be known as a new Xbox unless the fanbase decides they don’t need any FPSs or open-world games. How the hell are you gonna walk around the open world without a controller? Are you gonna walk in circles in your living room? It just won’t work that way.
I applaud MS for this idea, but it won’t go any further than something the Eye Toy did or the Wii already does.
well stated trophyman, but I see it more as you take one step forward and stay there to move forward and then turn your body to pan the direction you want to walk in…
kind of like a body camera….
and you’re right about the PS3 being able to add a firmware update to incorporate this sort of thing…but Microsoft presented it first…at least in this fashion anyways…
Sony started it….Nintendo went in another direction and then Microsoft took both of these things and have made it better…
…so is it Sony’s turn to take this…and make it better?
don’t think any of it matters much until next generation platforms are released with this being more in mind from start compared to added on. As far as the sony ms add ons i’ll place my bet on sony, for having personal experience on this from ps eye, to sixaxis to current eyetoy. ms seemed to not have any real intention of motion control.
I’ve seen the Eye Toy mentioned as a counter argument to Natal. That’s pretty ridiculous, honestly. First, I’ll say that none of us here have any idea what Natal is actually going to bring to the table, so we’ll have to just wait and see. But to argue that the Eye Toy “did it first” would mean that you’re arguing for Eye Toy as a meaningful game-changer. What’s the last thing you played with Eye Toy? Have you ever even used it? Give me a break. Sony monumentally screwed up everything related to that piece of technology – whether the actual tech is good or not. Hopefully Natal is the next step in virtual evolution.
