Mai Shiranui has been a long time mainstay of the King of Fighters series, she’s been in all but The King of Fighters XI and this was due to her being in Neo Geo Battle Coliseum and SNK didn’t want to double dip in character selection between the two games other than the big time KOF characters such as Kyo, Iori, Kim, and Terry. This time around however with the King of Fighters XII, there’s no excuse, what’s going on SNK? Recent articles have revealed that Mai was removed to keep the game within a teen rating as having Mai in would raise the rating to mature.
To me, this is just plain silly when Street Fighter 4, released just this past February featured Chun-Li in all her big legged glory. Now if you know Chun-Li and Mai Shiranui at first glance you might think well Mai Shiranui is less clothed, of course she’d be an M ranking.
Well how about the fact that in SF4, Chun-Li’s intro for SF4 sees her spinning on her hands, legs in the air in Spinning Bird Kick position showing you every crevice but the implied goods, a little purposely risque considering the camera is entirely focused on her legs, you don’t even see her face until the end of the intro.
Let’s talk about how Chun-Li has erect nipples for the entirety of your gameplay experience and the panty shots you get during her most famous move, made worse if you buy the DLC of downloadable costumes. Lastly we come to Sakura who’s skirt is very obviously too short as she’s give you shots of her underwear with practically every move.
Compare this to Mai Shiranui who would have only been a 2d sprite, who wears a pretty skimpy outfit to be sure, but if she was anything like previous KoF games would have only featured some bouncing breasts, which is pretty realistic considering her fighting stance, fighting style, and outfit. Lastly there’d be some panty shots while she’s falling but that’s about it unless SNK had something completely out there in mind.
When you think about bouncing breasts and some panty shots which you’re trying to sell to a demographic that already bought C.Viper’s huge ones, with a tie between them to draw attention, The ESRB is a little silly for trying to give SNK Playmore and Ignition a hard time about Mai.

2 things:
1) I bet you could have found a sexier image than that.
2) I agree that it is a double standard of sorts, but I think that Mai has always been more obviously sexual. While Chun-Li has the legs, cleavage is typically more associated with sex, in my opinion, anyway.
Bro, I’ve be saying that the ESRB needs to reforms it’s rating system for years. The use of alcohol, an act in reality requires the person to be 21 years of age in the USA, receives an E rating with games, while jiggling breast, though clothed, can get a game a M rating. Why? I rather have my kids watching jiggling breast than be influenced by a game to think drinking is okay. There’s a whole list of double standards too. I like the fact that the ESRB can help parents choose games for their kid with more ease, but I hate that it can actually influence developers to do certain things like this because of the fear of a higher rating thus resulting in lower sales and profits.
This article has no basis in fact. I’ve been following the game since it was announced and I have not seen any articles on any KOF related websites, Ignition, or SNKP themselves stating Mai was removed from the game because of her tits. There’s been no confirmation at all that she was in the game in the first place.
Besides, if the ESRB cared about it that much, SNKP would just give her the sports bra giggle prevention system that they gave her in other console ports where the breast animation is removed.
Any inclusion of Mai in the game has been pure speculation based off of some artwork from the KOF 15th anniversary site (and K’ with her). Nothing more.
If you have any sources please provide them, otherwise you should research and confirm the issue before you get your panties in a bunch (pun intended).
I’m going to miss Mai and her hotness…I love her with all my heart.
And yeah, she IS the series’ Chun-Li so it’s a little weird that she was excluded.
