Advertisements on X-Box Live are nothing new, but the latest announcement of Silverlight ads integration into the dashboard has sparked a backlash amongst XBL users.
The biggest worry amongst users is that advertisements on the dashboard will become like pop up ads on web pages that take up half the screen and are awkward to get rid of.
I liken XBL to BSKYB or Cable. You pay a monthly fee (subscription) so you get a better service, be it features or content; it is further subsidised with advertisements and cost of console/game. You get the latest shows and films but advertisements every twelve minutes suck!
PSN is more like the BBC or PBS, you pay one off fees (cost of console/game) and you get very few ads. There is quality but it is usually months behind.
I remember the Doritos promotion on XBL and welcoming it.

A couple of months ago Sprint brought us Rag Doll Kung Fu free on US PSN.
I prefer my life ad free. But if ads are providing a service to me and not just a constant bombardment, then I will accept them as a necessary evil.
The problem is: is XBL still worth the subscription fee?
Is the money Microsoft generating from advertising equal to that generated via subscriptions? Probably not.
But is the XBL service still so far ahead of the competition that it justifies a subscription as well as further integration of advertisements? Probably not.
XBL subscribers should protest with their money and not their mouths. If the service is no longer worth the money, why are you still paying?

while i like alot of things about live, i prefer the not so cluttered psn with option to change how you view when looking for something new.
That said, psn still has more to go. Now, for the big question of where can i start a petition to get me some playtv, vidzone action here in the states? xbox has filled in its advertised media (center) extension (very much attached) to your windows pc. while, ps3 has yet to do so with no preferred media server(most work w/no true support), browser just a lil’ better than avg cell phone and, missing an opportunity by not having netflix/blockbuster access could offer a membership based rentals on psn. with playtv your ps3 can be the wii to your cable subscription in terms of access and value.
I tried vidzone the other day. It’s pretty good, just a couple of ads on the main menu. If ads are providing a service, then I’m all for ‘em.
I think there’s no play tv in the states cos you don’t have much free to air tv, am I wrong?
