Of the five people I know with a PS3, four of them started with a 360. With a multi-platform game they are more likely to buy it for the 360. This is because they can top up their gamerscore and more importantly they have more friends with a 360.
For these reasons, the PS3 has become a machine for exclusive games only.
If consoles had no exclusives, how would they distinguish themselves from the competition? In other industry, reputation is important, such as the reliability of a car. But gaming is different, we are the consumers of content.
I’m a fan of Batman, and I have an affinity with the WB brand, but that didn’t stop me watching Transformers 2 or Star Trek.
There may be short term loyalty to a console, but this is eroded when the next gen comes along, at that point it is about the content.
Friends of mine moved from PS2 to 360 because they didn’t want to wait a year for the PS3. When it was released, the 360 offered exclusive games with next gen graphics and a superior online experience. Most notably in the States the 360 enjoys a sizeable lead.
Today, Sony’s machine does not offer a worse experience online. But because of it’s position as a secondary machine in homes with a 360, it lags in multi-platform game sales.
Exclusive content is why I chose PS3 over 360. Knowing I’ll get MGS4 as well as first party content such as Ratchet and Clank was more important than Gears of War or Halo.
The exclusives PS3 has coming up interest me greatly. A large number of them are aimed at the hardcore. The majority of the hardcore market yet to own a PS3 have a 360 and so even when the PS3 console is sold with the exclusive game, the PS3 is likely to continue lagging in sales of multi-platform games.

i ony buy exclusive games on ps3 any mutiplatform on 360
Thanks for your comment on my article.
Tony, I don’t have editing power right now for some reason but please capitalize the appropriate words in the article’s title. It should “PS3 Only Good for Exclusives?”
That makes two of us. Capitals scare me anyways.
hey, don’t that dweeb push you about
To be fair, he looks more like Rude Dog.
and of the few exclusives that they have how many have the pull of an mgs game? m.a.g. @ 256 w/o party will not standout from mw2, heavy rain, qte in all w/o exceptional story will be a waste of thought, still cannot believe they let socom out the gate how they did! the remaining imo may have a lower standard and still be great. leaving me so close to replacing my 360 after 3rd rrod mainly because for all the promises of “more” due to cell etc, etc, while m.s. is outpacing (no not in sales… alone) but in “supported” applications to round out these 2 media centers. WHERE’S MY EYEPET!?
Great exclusives in every genre, and they’re getting better every year, for years to come. A multiplat nowadays has to be really really good or I wait & save my cash for the next PS3 exclusive, even 10 lousy bucks for this weeks WipEout HD Fury…online is a blast!
Well, it’s also great for watching BluRay Movies. For hard core games, I still prefer my PC, which as not RRoD yet.
dude that is old news RROD THIS RROD THAT… get off ur old skl talk… 360 primary ps3 secondary that is how it is that is how it always will be… gd luck next gen…
PS. SONY NEXT TIME DONT BE ARROGANT AND LISTEN TO THE CUSTOMER’S NEEDS and not think u know it all.
If RROD is old new why did my 360 get the RROD just the other day. Please don’t be a bigot.
shutup. A problem that cause total hardware failure never ceases to be a problem UNTILL ITS FIXED!!! Adding a three year warenty dose not fix the problem.
I mainly use my PS3 for exclusives as well and watching blu ray movies. Without the blu ray factor for movie viewing it would be hard to justify spending a premium to play those exclusives though. They are not that much different than the Xbox 360 exclusives as far as gameplay experience (face it, the SixAxis has become secondary in support now). For the remainder of 2009 we have Splinter Cell, GTA IV DLC, Halo ODST, Forza 3 and Left4Dead 2 on one console and the other has M.A.G., new Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted 2 and Demons Soul. So as far as I’m concerned neither one is totally outshining the other.
The PS3 needs to distinguish itself, it’s the most expensive console. Will the few exclusives per year be enough? Will blu ray support be enough? Time will tell but it’s a good thing Sony has a long term plan. It’s just too bad they are not the only ones who control that plan.
Every game I own is for PS3 and not only exclusives with the exception of fable 2.
Have you not noticed the PS3′s multi-plats continually improving? 1st. party Dev’s have quickly gotten the hang of developing for the PS3, hence the amazing AAA exclusives it produces, so its only a matter of time before the 3rd. party Dev’s get the hang of it and the PS3 becomes the dominant console for multi-platform titles… Of course if this is to be the case then is should take them (the 3rd. party Dev’s) a little longer to get the hang of it because they must develop for two consoles simultaneously.
Bruce is an idiot. If you actually had a PS3 then you’d know that it has more than a ” few exclusives ” and that many of them are some of the greatest titles this gen.
I actually have a ps3, model cecha01, orig 60gb, since ’06. should have it back tomorrow due to blinking light problem. “few exclusives” was meant to refer to those ahead and the few (for good reason) a year. Not every game is for every gamer, esp if faults i’ve mention were to be. I have no allegiance to any one console. All i want is for them to perform as advertised or greater. And while i doubt i’d ever really replace 360, i still appreciate the fact that w/o NATAL, we would likely hear nothing about PS EYE facial/body/digit detailed recognition and motion controllers opening a race to current and near future gaming options. oh, and lastly there needs to alot more demos so ppl can create their own opinions (as does live). A bird in the hand, worth more than delayed promises from year to year. Now, ahem! WHERE’S MY EYEPET?!
I WANT MY PLAYTV! …in the u.s.
correction – as live DOES.
ps1 ’95, ps2 ’00. ps3 ’05 delayed to ’06 ppl would lose their minds to hearing of a PS4 in 2011 right now…. a 720 (no natal) on the other hand. whats your opinion on that?
Spot on mate. If it wasnt for Heavy Rain & Uncharted 2 I wouldnt be turning me PS3 on til about 2011
Please shut the fuck up.
Seriously, just shut up.
I disgaree, I think it’s down to personal preference. I buy all my games for PS3 and get the 360 exclusives, the complete reverse. I prefer the PS3 for controller comfort among another things, most of my friends have PS3 and no Xbox so its the sensible choice for me. Plus, I prefer trophies over achievements.
‘The PS3 has become a machine for exclusive games only.’
So says you….!
You aren’t the typical gamer and I doubt the people you are friends with are either. I do the same things as you describe but i’d hardly consider it the norm. Most people own one or the other. Otherwise you’re a big time gamer or you’re wealthy or both.
That’s actually false.
Games like Resident Evil 5 and Street Fighter 4 actually sold more in the PS3 than the 360 while great exclusives like Infamous or Killzone 2 sold not nearly as expected.
I have to say there is only one reason why multiplat sell better on 360 and thats the install base. Proportionally, they sell equal or in some cases better on the ps3 (RE5, Street Fighter, Burnout, Devil May Cry etc)
Thats it, nothing else.
In fact, even with the exclusive DLC microsoft boasted so much about for GTAIV, the game still sold to roughly the same proportion of 360 and ps3 users.
This is the most goddamn stupid article I’ve seen in weeks.
you obviously haven’t been reading N4G lately…
GAMES ARE GETTING RACIST!!!lol
Agreed, this is freaking awful. You mention good points and then don’t even back up those points. FTUTA.
Honestly, these comments seem more interesting that the article itself.
i use my ps3 for everything from watch movies to playing games..
playstion is my life
As fanboyish as this sounds it’s about right. I love my ps3 soo much and i use it for everything, including watching movies on surfthechannel.com, and to put music on (I have an arcade 360). In fact the only feature i like more on the 360 is the abillity to listen to music as i play games.
That being said i definately see the point of the author. I was about to buy MW2 for my xbox because of better online support. Microsoft scwred me out of this as my live ran out. PS3 online is better for multiplat games for 1 and only reason: PSN IS FREE!
I lick a dogs butt hole one time. Taste good
This makes absolutely no sense. For one thing, both consoles are on dead even footing when it comes to the useless “reward” system. Anyone who buys into their Gamer Score neglects their trophy collection. For another, the reason you have more friends on the 360 is because you keep buying games on the 360. If you actually switched, that would change over. There is nothing about the 360 that actually makes it good for multiplats, whereas there are a fair few things for the Ps3 that do.
So, this article is basically saying that the PS3 is the only platform you need. If the PS3 has “good” exclusives, and also gets really good multi-platform games, then that’s a pretty damn solid console if i ever heard of one. Combine that with the fact that 90% of the exclusives on the 360 eventually come out on the PC…
Buy a PS3 and a good computer and you are set!
As GamingVice knows Im a huge fan of the site and podcast. That being said I have got to ask Tony who is your dealer? I mean how can u say ps3 only good for exclusives. I have a 360 and ps3 and prefer to buy multi plats on ps3 for several reasons.
1. Ps3 disc do not scratch
2. PSN IS FREE
3. Xbox Community is filled with MORE racist/annoying assholes.(PSN has them but they seem to be a small portion.)
4. I am a game collector( With this is mine xbox 1 are not collectable. Gamestop no longer accepts xbox 1 consoles or games.
Who cares, buy it on the platform that suits you, both are great systems. Equal in my eyes.
There will always be people who say that the 360 is better, and there will always be people who say the PS3 is better. It depends on your preference.
As for me, I’ve had a 360 for a couple of years and just this year bought a PS3. I’ve never been happier. PS3 doesnt scratch the games every time I play them, I found that the multiplatform games actually run better on my PS3, and the games look way better on my HDtv when I play them on my PS3.
Every person will have different tastes. But I’ll continue to extremely enjoy my PS3 and only use my 360 for 360 exclusives.
This is a terrible article for several reasons, and I have to wonder how on earth rubbish like this passes for journalism to be honest. Trying to pass off your opinion as fact in an article like this is just ridiculous.
Having said that, for me personally my 360 is only used for exclusives. All the major multiplatform games that I like to play are all superior on the PS3. Combine this with Xbox Live being so incredibly laggy and the fact I’ve yet to encounter any similar problems with PSN and it’s really no contest for me. It’s the same situation for a fair amount of my friends too, a fair amount of whom have sold their 360s since purchasing a PS3.
Its a very stupid statement that you label a ps3 a SECONDARY CONSOLE in a house that also has a 360. Articles that start to indulge into the launches of the two consoles and move on from their tend to end with the ps3 possessing a negative connotation not to mention bias. If the ps3 was just good for consoles it would have been done long time, threats such as Activision would be a reality and devs that make multiplatform games would have stopped supporting the ps3 if they saw no merit or profit in it. However, that is not the case thus, games like Burnout Paradise, Street Fight IV, New Batman game, COD4 have done or set to do just as well on the ps3 as its 360 counterpart. Usually we see in sales something like 360,000 sold on ps3 while 360 sold 450,000. The gap is neither significant nor a projection thats worth praising however, its understandable due to the install base. Articles that hold the opinion like yours where the ps3 should be better than the 360 but isn’t due to these and these reasons and focusing on its downfalls for the past 3 years are getting VERY VERY OLD. Its time to move on dude. 95% of the greatest games ever made are exclusives, so i ask you, is the 360 only good for multiplats?
“is the 360 only good for multiplats?”
I’ll be tackling this in my follow up article.
Stay tuned
It’s funny, I bought the 360 first and then the PS3 and I only buy exclusives for the 360 and everything else to the PS3. Why? because after replacing the 360 AGAIN I really prefer something that Will not die before I can finish a game. the small drop n graphic fidelity that multiplats have on the PS3 is NOTHING compared to having a WHOLE library of games I cannot play or even worse having to fork out another 200.00 to play them.
I had a 360 for awhile, it red ringed. Knowing many other people have had major issues with theirs, I decided that I needed more reliable hardware. Sold my 360 (when it got back from Microsoft)and bought a ps3, along with MGS4 and Resistance that day. Long story short; I have not looked back once. It operates quieter, has better games, online is free and less laggy then live, and games like Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 are far better games compared to Halo and Gears. You are right that the PS3 is good for exclusives, however its just all around a better system, its cheaper then a 360 for what your getting (add rechargeable batteries, a game, and wifi adapter to the 360 puts it at a higher price tag then the PS3) it has useful features that the 360 doesnt (web browser, bluetooth compatibility, and a blu ray drive.) and has a superior online service (its free, shopping on the playstation store doesnt require a magical points system, you pay exact amounts. yes there is less lag, and the games are larger then the usual xbox game. 32 for killzone, 60 for resistance, and MAG will have 256 players) The PS3 is a better system, hands down. If not, prove me wrong.
I’ve never owned a PS3 and I’m just an average high schooler who works at Culver’s. Out of the 12 360 games I own, only 3 are exclusives. This is very off topic, but nearly everyday when I read a “PS3 VS 360!! WHAT CONSOLE WINNSNSS!???!” article, there is always a mentioning of “wi-fi.” I really, really, want a statistic on how many people actually use wi-fi. Wireless connections will never, ever, ever be as good as a good ‘ol ethernet cable and gigabit router. Ever. So it’s pretty damn pointless to even buy a wi-fi adapter for a 360. And also, when people bitch about paying for Xbox Live, it really makes me want to slap a moron. $50 a year. Are you joking me? Just sit back, relax a little bit, and think about that. Of your income, unless you’re a helpless child who has no job and has yet to realize how fucked the real world is, I am pretty damn sure you can afford $50 a year. I pay for my own Live, just like everyone else. And I love it too, Live is so much fun. I cant wait to compete in a 1 vs 100 match
So to anyone with any brains, the common house-hold buys a 360 becasue they pay only $300 for it. Ps3′s are an all-in-one package for $400. This is also why more consumers get 360 multiplats cause that is the only system they own, unless of course they of a high income family. Which then again it just comes down to your personal choice. I wont buy a PS3 until it has a price drop to $300, and only for God of War 3. Oh my, thats an exlcusive
Just like to comment on the wireless thing… Every person i know with ps3 uses wireless cause we don’t want our beautiful apartments be ruined by ugly cables running everywhere
And when you just use your ps3 for playing there really is no ping difference at all. But the problem comes when you try to stream 1080p movies to your ps3 only then i would love to have faster wi-fi on my ps3. But hey at least i got wireless!
Ha Ha Ha. It’s really stupid to get upset over someone’s opinion. Everyone has the right of way.
Either way this article is weird. “Only good for exclusives” That’s like an extra perk that comes along with the system along with multiplatform games. Online isn’t that much a big deal for most too. I know more people who play offline more than on, like the average consumer cares too much about this stuff anyways “just cause it has an extra little thing.” PEOPLE NEED TO GROW UP
@ Hi, I’m Cody
, Cody you are an idiot and here’s why: First off you say that a wired connection is always better than a wireless connection and that NO ONE actually needs/uses a wi-fi adapter and would be stupid to do so. Well I agree that a wired connection is always better than wireless:However, I’ve been using a wi-fi adapter on my PS3 for exactly 6 months, I’m comparing it to my past wired connection because I had to switch rooms in my house and am no longer near my route so I NEED that wireless adapter, I’ve noticed that I’ve had the EXACT same performance with my wireless connection then with my wired.
I never have connection problems or lag so even though a wired connection IS better that certainly doesn’t mean a wireless connection is bad. You say that its pointless to buy a wi-fi adapter for your 360, but since im away from my router and don’t have a 100 foot Ethernet cable, if I had a 360 I wouldn’t be able to play online so I , like many of my friends, NEED a wi-fi adapter and even if we didn’t need it right away it would still come in handy in the future. I dont know people who bit*h about paying $50 a year for Live, but what i HATE is the people who complain and complain over and over about how the PS3 is SO OVERPRICED, when they pay $300 for their 360 and after two years of Live they could have bought a PS3 and gotten online for free.
PLUS the Blu-Ray player (even if you dont plan on using it , its still there) and the wi-fi adapter, AND the re-chargeable controllers, dont forget blu-ray discs are very reliable and the PS3 doesn’t have a disc scratching problem.. PS3 FTFW!!! Yes im a PS3 fan, but for all the right reasons
its the other way around for me.
i buy exclusives, or what there is for my 360 (the ones not on PC) and MP games for my ps3.
i hate using multi plat games on my 360 because if i want to play MP i have to grab the wired cable and worry about people tripping over it.
i refuse to pay 180 AUD for a wireless adapter when i can get one for my PC for 40, seriously i can not believe how M$ get away with their money gouging.
no wonder they got sued in europe several times for monopolizing the industry.
and trophies are a much better more thought out reward system.
with achievements a person who has say 100000 points is ranked exactly the same with others on that point range.
it does not matter if you got all of those points from extremely easy tasks or hard ones.
its rewarding you for playing games not challenging yourself and finishing something hard.
where trophies are different, they reward you for challenging yourself.
your ranked more on what trophies you have not how many you have.
so some one with 1000 trophies but 99% are bronze and no plat will be ranked lower than some one with say 800 trophies with 70% of them bronze and 6 plats.
o and not to mention PSN is free.
You said the PS3 is only for exclusives, but then there’s more reason to buy only the PS3 (for people who can’t afford both) because the PS3 has good exclusives, and, of course, all the multi-platform games too, whereas the Xbox 360 only has its ‘not-so-good’ exclusives, and the same multi-platform games.
Also, PSN is free, so buying games that have online multiplayer is a better choice for the PS3.
The controller is anyone’s own preference.
Anyway, the Xbox 360 has a LOT of flaws, so does the PS3 (like, for example you can’t login to 2 profiles while playing a game to get trophies. So you Resident Evil 5 fans playing with your family member? You have to complete it twice), but the PS3 has more smaller flaws than the 360, but Microsoft, by clever marketing and releasing it a year before was the ‘next-gen wonder’ so people bought it, and they managed to grab a lot of the ‘next-gen’ games that were later ported to the PS3, but still were exclusives on the Xbox 360 for a long time, because the PS3 just wasn’t out yet.
I actually haven’t touched my Xbox in a long while. I prefer the 360 for shooters but only if they are single player or exclusive because I refuse to pay to be able to play online. I still can’t believe microsoft is getting away with that…Another thing is that upgrading the HDD of the PS3 (which I have done) is much cheaper than with the 360. I want to download the DLC for GTA IV but I don’t have any space while on my PS3 I have gigs left! So I think it’s safe to say that I prefer buying my games on my playstation.
I feel the same way i buy the multiplattform games on the 360 and only uses the ps3 for their exclusive games and sometimes to watch movies. I do this cause i have more friends that i play with than i have on the ps3 and i think that the 360 controller is alot better than the one that comes with the ps3. Even though LIVE cost money i prefer that over the ps3 cause the live service on 360 is alot better and also they have alot more to offer on the marketplace than ps3 have.
I personally prefer PS3 trophies to 360 gamer score, i own all three major systems so im not biased, i prefer it because you can actually track acheivments better, when you do something really really good, you get a gold trophy and you and everyone else can tell how many gold, silver, bronze, platnum trophies you have, when you get the same acheivment on the 360 you get X amount of gamerscore which is added to a total score and your acheivment gets lost amungst the noise. so for me its better to go with the PS3, thats why multi plat games like Fallout 3 i got on the PS3, even knowing i was going to miss out on DLC.
I think to say that the ps3 is for exclusives only is stupid, the xbox360 can’t hurdly handle the 3rd party games without rrod and the exclusives push the 360 to it’s limits. I have had all 3 next gen consoles and I say had because the 360 rrod so many times I gave up on it, the flimsyest piece of junk ever, it doesn’t even deserve to be comparedvto the ps3.
Yes $50 dollars a year is very cheap, but honestly what are you paying for??? I used to be a 360 fan boy before I jumped ship, and being on PSN for over year now has made me wonder what I was paying for in the first place. Wi-Fi works amazing on PSN, sure not as good as wired but let me put it this way. When I moved into my new apartment, I did not have any internet set up yet, I hooked my ps3 up to my TV and played a bit of MGS4. Then I decided to scan for a wi fi signal to hi jack some internet for awhile. I found a very faint signal, around 40%, but still had internet, then I was able to check my myspace on the ps3 web browser (cant do that on a 360) and I played a few games of Resistance 2 with full 60 players and to my surprise; no lag, yes on a 40% wireless signal I played a 60 player game with no lag. It is currently wired however because it sits next to my computer so it made more sense. But it was nice watching youtube on my tv, cant do that on a 360.
A 360 is 300 dollars, now if you wanted the equivalent of what you get in a ps3, 300 + 100 dollars for wi-fi + 15-20 dollars for the play and charge kit + 50 dollars for a year of xbox live + a 60 dollar game= $530
Spend $400 on a ps3 and you have everything mentioned there except a game. If you want, you could get warhawk on the playstation network for 30 bucks (awesome game) and not even have to buy a game that day (or spend 10 bucks for FF7!!!!) Charging to play online is silly, unless were talking about MMO’s which require massive server maintenance, seeing as the average ps3 online game has more players that 360 and less lag, what the hell are you paying for. I remember big team battles on halo lagging all to hell, that was only 16 players. Killzone 2 has double that and I hardly see lag, Resistance has 60 and there is no lag. can someone explain what the hell $50 dollars a year gets you? and you realize if you have your 360 for maybe 5 years, thats $250 dollars, almost the price of another unit, what the hell are you paying for?? Smaller number of players, and terrible lag? And I also recall Live being down for maintenance more often then PSN ever is.
I dont really see the point in the article, as the same can be said for the 360, or any console.
So all this nonsense is based on 5 people that you know?, Hardly the basis for an article is it?.
I’m not knocking the PS3 i love it infact, I just found this article a waste of time.
You are a fucking retard. wolfv1, your right. there is no reason to spend $50 a year. and the ps3 is getting so much more on the stores and everything. the fact of the matter is, is why would you want to spend money on a multiplatform game when your paying more than you think. xbox 360 is having about 4 exclusives a year. so you pay $60 for them,so that will cost about $240. but then you also think about it, your actually paying 72.50 per exclusive. because you divide 50 by 4. thats 12.50, and each game is 60. so your pretty much buying a wii every year for just 4 eclusives. or even for multi platfrom games. if you have no membership to xbox live, dont pay for it. just get a ps3, and the online experience will be more fun, and less expensive.

Seriously, I can’t help but wonder if the people writing these things are 15 years old. Who the hell is hiring these horrible writers?
