If you’re still playing games from last Gen, or find yourself unsure of what to buy for your Next Gen console at this point then look no further! A few of our Broke Gamer writers are joining forces to compile a list of 10 games that you must own; one writer per console.
10) Grand Theft Auto 4
GTA and number 10?! Well yes, while the Lost and the Damned DLC is a whole new game it doesn’t add so much that you’d miss it if you owned the Playstation 3 version of this title. I won’t talk about the gameplay because if you’re a GTA fan you’ve bought the game already, and if you don’t have it, you’re not interested in this genre, you can’t go wrong with the king of sandbox.
9) Gears of War(series)
Gears sneaks its way onto this list just because of the fun factor, it sure is no technical marvel, but what I can guarantee is that when you pick up this game you’re in store for endless nights over Xbox Live with your friends or your random Xbox Live buddies. A game that keeps you playing even when you think you hate it just can’t be ignored.
8 ) Halo 3
Master Chief swings in at number 8 due to its age, to this day it is still an amazing game, while I may have complained about this title on Vice Weekly, you can’t go wrong with the largest community for an exclusive First Person Shooter. Halo’s multiple game types and Bungie’s consistent updating make this the number one title for shooter fans around the world.
7) Geometry Wars(series)
Geometry Wars has been at the front of the digital distribution market since the first game was announced for the announcement of the Xbox Live Arcade. The games innovative yet easy to understand control scheme puts it a cut above all other arcade shooters, I know, I know, you love Galaga and you love Asteroids, but pick up Geometry Wars and even though you’ll want to bite your tongue for saying it, it is the undeniable new king of arcade shooters.
6) N+
Love Ninjas? Love Platforming? Well look no further N+ combines the two into an oh so sweet flavor that is truly a blast to play on your own, with your friends, or against them. As you use your many skills and stage devices to reach the doors, time will fly right on by you. It may look like a child’s game at first glance due to the simplistic art style and goal, but reaching that door can only be accomplished by the most skilled ninjas.
5) Star Ocean 4
When you can sell 360s to the people of Japan, you’ve got something great on your hands, you can complain about switching discs, but let’s be honest, that’s the most excercise that a lot of gamers will get. While the voice overs are quite silly, the game play and story are very well executed here. Your characters can even play differently from one another giving you a reason to not just put all your eggs in your main character. As far as console RPGs go it doesn’t get much better than this.
4) Street Fighter 4
Isn’t this game multi-platform? Well yes, yes it is. However the online community resides on the Xbox 360. Its quite difficult to run into good connections on the Playstation 3 version of this title. You really have to work within the fighting game community to get a quality match on the PS3.
3) Tales of Vesperia
Remember how I said it couldn’t get much better than Star Ocean 4? Well I used “much” so I could have some breathing room. Tales of Vesperia offers an amazing story with great gameplay length. The characters are very fleshed out and the voice acting isn’t terrible which makes you actually want to sit through cut-scenes. Gameplay wise battles happen very much like Star Ocean in that they are real time, but on a 2d plane rather than 3d. Characters can also play differently, with varying speeds, spells and abilities.
2) Alien Hominid HD
A little confused to see this game so far on the list? Well you shouldn’t be, in fact, stop reading this article right now, turn on you 360, play Alien for 5 minutes, then come back to find out what number 1 is…. I bet you didn’t come back to finish after 5 minutes due to how addicting that yellow Alien’s game is. Its classic side scrolling shooting with that old school masochistic difficulty at its finest in HD. You’re allowed weapon upgrades, vehicles, and a ton of other things that are probably in farther levels that I could not yet get to because of how challenging the game is and how much I suck at this game. This is a good purchase for anyone who truly enjoys gaming.
1) Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion
Oblivion’s GOTY status was not at all smoke an mirrors. Bethesda truly allows you to do what you want, between all the side quests, the main story, all sorts of collecting and just plain traveling the huge world that is set before you will have you on this game for months. The concept may not be entirely original, but it is the best done. The title also hit the Playstation 3, but that version of the game has all sorts of programming problems, granted this was at a time where developers did not know how to properly use the Playstation 3, it still has the Xbox 360 version as the superior version. What makes this game ultimately special however is just the sheer amount of ways to play it, be a warrior, a mage, a monk, an archer, cycle through all the races, do all the sidequests, do none of them, the way the game plays out and how difficult it is is entirely up to the way you decided to play the game.

Great to see Alien Hominid so high on the list! I’ve just never been a big Oblivion fan so I can’t agree with your top choice.
I was also really surprised to see that you included Star Ocean 4 and Tales of Vesperia yet completely left out Mass Effect.
So you put N+, and leave out Fallout 3? REally good job
Seriously this is the list. Three xbox live arcade titles, three rpg’s, and halo at position 8. Ditto everything Roger said before me but I’m having trouble processing it.
I could have contrived a better list walking into a Gamestop blindfolded rummaging through the used bin section.
Oblivion is a good game, but it is not worst on the ps3. I have the ps3 version and my friend has the 360 and they are the same pretty much.
good list but thesf4 online commntis totally false…infact i wouldsay its better on ps3 due to home game launching and an extremely active community
There are some great games on this list. But I’d like to see more top tier exclusive titles like MassEffect (or at least I’ve heard its a great title) instead of having 5 multi-platform games like SF:IV, GTA:IV, and N+. Keep in mind this is coming from someone who only owns a PS3 but would like to see and hear more about the 360′s good exclusive titles.
LOL (I just read the other comments) OH NO! THE AUTHOR DIDN’T PUT MY OPINION OF A GREAT GAME ON THIS LIST, IT MUST BE FAILS WITH OUT MY OPINIONS ON THE LIST
whoever made this list is on drugs… therefore must die
Hey webmaster, thank you very much for providing this post…, i found it very useful. Greets, Samantha F.!!
