When I originally played the GT5 HD Concept demo of the demo of the game set to release later this year, I was not too thrilled with what I played, but I told myself that it was just a demo and that I should reserve my thoughts until I really play it. Fast forward into the not too distant future and I played GT5 Prologue, once again I was not overwhelmed by this game – especially since the only difference between Prologue and the final copy was supposed to be more tracks and cars.
But after watching some of the footage for Gran Turismo 5 that was shown at GamesCom, I am officially blown away without even playing the game. Recently I have gone as far as to say this is the most over-hyped or over-rated game of 2009, I have already eaten my words and then some.
The realism for GT5 as well as the collision detection are something inside of this world, because it’s what would really happen if you drove a certain way, rather than how you would in a normal video game. This isn’t Burnout, Need for Speed, Motorstorm, Formula 1 or Forza – this is the ultimate driving simulator for your console. If you want to play a racing game and crash a lot and bounce and do tricks, then this isn’t for you, this is a real challenge with real-time physics.
If you watch the video I have embedded into the article, you’ll see gameplay footage from GamesCom on how not to drive. This is how a lot of gamers like to drive as they tend to be more reckless and not take the same approach they would in the real world. Try driving in the real world how you drive in a game like Burnout: Paradise and you’ll end up with the same result you’ll find in Gran Turismo 5, and I love Burnout: Paradise as it’s one of my favorite games this generation has to offer as far as a total package.
Buy Gran Turismo 5, not for another game – but to bring reality to your Playstation 3 whether you already own one or will be jumping on board after the Slim hits the shelves. Enjoy – reality.

As being a PS3/X360 owner, i’m waiting for Forza3 and GT5, but i don’t understand when you say this game isn’t FORZA. Are you saying that forza has bad collision physics? Maybe you have never played the game, i can say the collision physics in FORZA 1, and 2, are way better than what we saw in GT5 at Gamescon. (i’m not saying the driving physics are better)
thanks for the response carbonKid, you made a very good point..
and no it wasn’t a knock against Forza…forza is a great game…however this is the ultimate driving simulation and that’s not Forza’s thing…and there is more to driving than collision physics…
what he is saying is forza is more arcady than gt5
YEs and it is true
I play Prologue and forza
Forza is Arcade
no speed sansation and you cant drive true the grass with no problem
I change all the setting to simulation and no sansation of realist.
I do race and real live, and GT5 is the best racing simulator on consol!
So you’re actually saying that a game with shitty cosmetic-only collisions and damage is “a real challenge with real-time physics” and that a game that encourage you to play bumper cars “is the ultimate driving simulator for your console”?
When I drive a real car, I know that smashing into a wall at 120MPH will lose me more then just my front bumper. When I play A REAL simulation game, I expect to get the same result.
GT was the best selling racing game in the last decade, but gameplay-wise it still seems like a game from the last decade.
that guy was the worse driver ever on toyko challenge ….. man he should have practice on GRAN TERISMO 3 first
he should have practice on GRAN TERISMO 3 first toyko challenge it’s the same track
People who drive like these are why steering wheels dont last, you dont need to turn the wheel until it stops on every turn or hardly ever(if ever)I wont let people like this use my wheel, he needs a controller.
exactly….and while I would consider buying a wheel for this game, I definitely will be the only person using the wheel unless I know someone else is actually competent enough to use it…
You really should have played GT5 at gamescom. There’s a reason why the game is getting so much bad press. Even the German press – which loves GT usually – didn’t like the demo. On the other hand Forza 3 is getting a lot of good previews.
Please actually play the games before you hype them.
it is already visibly better than prologue in every aspect…and when you say that I should play a game before hyping it…
you should play a game before hating it..
I played both demos at Gamescom. I do own a PS3 including GT5P and I did also own a PS1 with GT1 and GT2, as well as a PS2 with GT3 and GT4.
Not everyone is married with a console or a game. There is absolutely no point in hyping a game before playing it. To be honest: The demo shown at the showfloor of gamescom sucked. The same dumb AI etc but it looked better than any other racing game.
It’s as easy as that.
for one, I am already doubting that because you assume I am married to it like I haven’t called it the most over-hyped game this generation…
and on another point…I’m going to say that you didn’t play it at gamesCom…this only helps your point by fabricating..
thanks for the follow up response though…
I forgot to mention:
Just look at the German gaming press. Usually Germans love Gran Turismo and can’t stand Microsoft. This is why the 360 isn’t nearly as popular as Wii or PS3 over here.
After gamescom it’s like the gaming world is upside down in Germany. Forza 3 is getting excellent press, GT5…not so much. Even the gaming publication of the biggest German newspaper didn’t like the GC version of GT5. But they did like Forza.
After playing the demos you can clearly see that Polyphony set their priorities wrong.
