To all of the PC gamers out there who are on the up and up of the PC world, yes, I know this game came out a little while ago. The reason why I am writing this tid-bit on the game so late is because: A: My family computer was pretty terrible and slow, and B: I just recently got a new Macbook and it was only just this week that Id Software allowed Mac OS X and Linux to join the frag fest. Now that I got that out of the way, that should eliminate the idiotic comments on the article.
First off, even though Quake Live has it negatives along with its positives, the game should still be downloaded by everyone. Why do I say that? Well because this game is the best buy you can get, even in todays economic crisis. Quake Live is a free to play first person shooter that opens up in whatever supported browser you are using. Thats right, a free FPS in your browser…and it is also totally awesome. Currently the game supports Windows XP/Vista, Mac OS X 10.4+, Linux, Firefox 2+, Internet Explorer 7, and lastly Safari 3+. However, there is a problem for those of you out there who use Firefox on your Macs. Just as the latest update was released, a problem involving Firefox on Macintosh computers arose, but a post by the dev team on the Quake Live forums showed they are currently fixing that. Now on to the game and all it contains.
Quake Live is just like Quake 3 Arena, in that it is a very “twitch” shooter. You will need very fast reflexes if you want to make it through more than a few seconds after spawning. The gameplay is fast and relentless to say the least. Luckily, taking some notes from games like Madden 09, there is a skill test you take in the form of a 1v1 bot match while the game downloads in order to determine your level of play. This means that anyone, even console players who are noobs on mouse and keyboard setups, can have fun in the arena. Also, if you feel that you want to try your hand at higher levels of play, you can also join these rooms as well at any time. You are never stuck with just your determined skill level.
There are 40 arenas in Quake Live and 5 gametypes including CTF, Duel, FFA, Team Deathmatch, and Clan Arena. With this amount of content the game will rarely feel boring. The weapons all feel to be balanced and range from the starting Assault Rifle to the close range Shotgun and then to the crazy Lightning gun. Almost every FPS has the crazy weapons and Quake Live is no different. And as stated before, people coming from Quake 3 Arena will feel right at home with this installment as they are pretty much identical.
Now just because something is free doesn’t mean it is half assed. Quake Live comes complete with its own website dedicated to it (like Halo’s Bungie.net and Killzone.com) which will give everyone access to leaderboards, forums, and even a friends list. And for all of the newcomers to Quake, there is also an online manual. News will also be shown on the site as well, which covers the recent updates and patches involving the game. Quake Live comes with a load of content for being a free game, and we should all tip our hats to Id Software.
With the amount of good news comes the bad, however. Well, first off, I am not actually complaining about the game at all, but rather stating some problems people have been experiencing. I don’t feel anyone can be justified in making complaints about Quake Live unless its the gameplay because the game is still in Beta as well as it is FREE! If anyone complains about being disconnected sometimes or random hiccups here and there should really stop it. The game gets updated constantly and so far the team has been doing a great job fixing many problems. Even still, you will experience some crashes and disconnects now and then as well as other little problems, but for a free game STILL in Beta, I don’t think that really hurts the game at all.
Quake Live is a superb game in every way, unless you are a graphics whore. But thats the great part of it! Having less than stellar graphics means that anyone can play at any time. You don’t need to waste money on graphics and sound cards because the game was meant to be accessible. That is what makes Quake Live such a great experience. That, and it is free. I don’t feel I am able to give the game a score or rating, but I will say that everyone should at least try it, and I’m sure many will just love it.
