Sony’s Yellow Light of Death Conspiracy

Sony’s Yellow Light of Death Conspiracy

On Thursday 17th September, Sony’s PlayStation 3 will feature on the BBC’s consumer show, Watchdog. This television program acts as an outlet for consumers to voice their concerns about products and services. Lasts weeks show covered a range from sunbeds to cable television to school uniforms.

The show is no stranger to the video game industry. It has covered the Dreamcast’s poor internet connection, PlayStation 2 disc reading issues and Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training not recognising regional accents.

The Xbox 360 has made appearances on the show for it’s Red Light of Death and Destruction & it’s disc scratching issues.

With the PS3 due to premier on the show regarding it’s Yellow Light of Doom and Gloom, I have to question the timing. I do not deny that the PS3 has a failure problem, it absolutely does, the latest figure of 10% is way too high. A couple of weeks after the launch of the new PS3 (Slim), with it’s marketing push now in full swing; the timing of this Watchdog is what concerns me.

Why is it not until now that Watchdog is tackling the problem? Watchdog was all over the Xbox 360 14 months after launch, but the PS3 doesn’t get on until 20 months after launch? Of course this is down to how many complaints Watchdog receive. The conspiracy is not propagated by Watchdog.

The Watchdog program will show the old PS3 in it’s tests and archive footage. If Sony representatives do make an appearance on the show, they will without doubt refer to the Slim as a further improvement on the problem. Herein lies the conspiracy.

The conspiracy is that which illuminates the problem of PS3′s failing at a time when a new PS3 model is launched and promoted.

I am the owner of a PS3 40gb bought when GTA IV came out. With the release of the Slim, I have been faced with the dilemma of whether to trade … up? This is more due to the reduction in noise and the YLOD than hard drive space, power consumption or physical size.  You can hear my views on the PS3 Slim in more depth on the Vice Weekly Podcast.

Along with enticing new customers to buy a PS3, there is an agenda to convince current owners to adopt the new PS3 Slim. This would be to generate new sales as well as inflate the perceived PS3 install base.

I’ve had no problems with my PS3 (knock wood …), the decision to get a Slim is mine alone. It just seems that there is an invisible hand attempting to give me that extra push.
