I’m pretty sure that if you’re reading this, then you’ve seen the E3 demonstration for the motion controls that Sony has planned for the PS3. When I watched the demo, I noticed a couple of things in such a short amount of time which led me to believe that Sony had a new Eye Cam in the works to work with the motion controls.
For one, the response and movement recognition showed little to no lag which contradicts the Eye Camera that I currently know of. Another thing I noticed is that the people using the motion controls appeared to have little to no experience with the device at all. Since the Eye Camera launched, people have complained about the lag and the responsiveness of the camera. It would only make sense for Sony to try and upgrade this technology that they had planned to work with their latest motion control technology.
Sony could use this as a chance to bundle the motion controls and the Eye Camera with the PS3 at a $299 price point by this time next year which would hold tremendous value – especially if they added a game that supports these controls. What a way to bowl over the casual market than to offer a Slim PS3 with 160GB (or more), two motion controllers, an Eye Cam and a DS3 controller, wouldn’t you say?
Now you’re probably saying (cliche) “But Don, who are your sources? Aren’t you just some random blogger?” Not exactly, for one I went to Sears today and noticed they had the PS3 Eye Cam for 14.97 on clearance along with the Eye of Judgement bundle for 9.97. How that pricing makes sense I will never know, but that’s besides the point. The thing we should be asking is “Why is sears phasing out the PS3 Eye cam along with a bundle that supports it?
The logic here is that there will be an improved Eye Cam that will support the new motion controls that Sony has planned for the PS3. When the Eye Cam was created, Sony didn’t have these motion controls planned yet, so it wasn’t built to support it at the time, not to mention the fact that creating a device that has to work in response to another such as the motion controls going with the Eye Cam is tricky. Why not just create a whole new Eye Cam set up to respond with the motion controls entirely?

u suck
not me, I am great!
No you really suck.
No lag on my PS EYE cam. It records at 60 fps at SD res… In the demo you can see the same PSE cam standing on the TV. MC 1:1 will have some motion tracking features without the cam.
The LEDs on the wand are the reason there’s no lag, and the people who are demoing it (Richard Marks and Anton Mikhailov ) are the one’s who are developing the motion controls.
The Playstation Eye has a firmware that can be upgraded. It can also record at 120 frames per second at half its resolution. I’ve been using the Playstation Eye for multitouch applications for some time. You can read the details here

I’m not sure where you got your information from, but what I saw at E3 is the exact same PS Eye that I have. I’ve experience NO lag from it whatsoever. It works perfectly. All Sony has to do is release an update for the PS Eye in a firmware update for the Eye, if it even needs one. It will save them a lot more cash than developing an entire new camera all together.
dude everything you said is bull. The people showing the demo are the guys working on this motion controller concept. And i dont know where you get lag, my ps eye works great with mesmerize and the aquatopia fish tank. When i play mesmerize the camera works perfect and it does quite well at tracking my hands.
Rambo says “The Don” is absolutely clueless and should reserve his opinions for the deranged mental patients whom he lives with
I really don’t think it would be a good idea to bend over the people who have purchased current PS3 cameras. Which is why I do not think your guess is correct.
but it PS EYE Does support it.. And the motion sensing was based on WHAT they can do with PS eye..
Wow so SEARS sales something cheap an you think that means a new cam? sorry but Target was selling them for about 29.99 last year and Hastings had them for 39.99 (Their price to start with was 69.99) and I even pick up a new copy of Folklore at Sears for 5 bucks and MGS4 for 20 bucks at Hastings.
So yeah -_- you do suck.
thanks for the response…your feedback is greatly appreciated..
I will assure you that I do not suck…in fact I will prove it..
Sears has games for cheap when they are getting rid of them and that can mean one thing…and they also put them on clearance and it doesn’t mean much at all…
If they only had the Eye of Judgement Bundle on clearance, I wouldn’t have batted an eyelash at it…
but they also had the Eye Camera on clearance as well which doesn’t make sense because the only other PS3 accessory to get this treatment was the Sixaxis controller…
Sears is even still carrying PS2 accessories as well as accessories for the original XBox…
they don’t phase out still existing accessories like that and I know this for a fact personally…it doesn’t matter how well or poorly these items are selling for…they still keep them around…
Doesn’t change the fact what you said is full of sh!t, Target does the samething and are GameStop did it to, and so far the people working on the new controller have been using only PS Eye.
So until their is a video of Sony with a new cam, yeah your are full of it.
nope, the fact is that they don’t phase items out at the same time…
if Sears puts a peripheral on clearance, then they have something new planned….one way or another…
So does that mean a new Forklore is coming out? Does that mean Unreal Tournament 4 is coming out? NO!! the fact is that Sears is just trying to get things sold to have room.
An not room for a new cam, because you have to be pretty dumb to think that is why and right now stores are doing all kinds of sales to get people to buy from them. Which shows more that your so called facts are notthing more the fasle hope.
dumbass
the PS eye can record up to 120 fps, just not on FULL resolution
what lag are you talking about ? when you join a video chat the lag is because of the internet connection, you stupid douche
get your facts right before you claim shit
Hi, I’m The Don and not “dumbass”…typo much? ahaha
but thanks for the reply…I have actually seen the PS Eye lag personally because of some dimwit who has Eye of Judgement (waste of money) and it lagged….
this can be improved upon via patch, but the Eye Cam still lags so you can take your fanboy (gasp) glasses off..
The PS Eye was on show at Edinburgh Interactive this year demonstrating the EyePet.
I can quite assure you that there was no lag at all when using the standard PS Eye and regular PS3, as the demonstrators were.
Granted, there were some issues with lag within the first month or so after release, but these issues were ironed out in a subsequent FW upgrade.
In saying that, a slightly upgraded Eye bundled with the DualShock 4 (The break-apart controller we keep (not) hearing about with integrated motion controls) would be pretty sweet.
I expect to see this all announced in the first half of 2010, possibly at E3.
Thoughts?
I’m really not the rude type, but this just made me mad.
The more and more I read the more my brain cells died. Are you stupid are is this just a stupid FUD article?
The camera is the same, the people who demoed it are those who designed it, and all of what you say is just so stupid as fuck, not to mention a whole shit ton of speculation on the side. Try thinking before you type next time.
I’m pretty sure you didn’t read the article anyways, but thanks for the response….
and you should check into the Emergency Room if your brain cells are going…
I think you’re better off there instead of reading my FUD article…
No, I did read it. You know nothing. The only thing you mention “credible” is the Sears sale, but yeah, they might be clearing out those bundles for something new.. like a Wand / Camera bundle. After all, Eye of Judgement isn’t popular, and if they don’t sell them, it’s just wasted money, so they atleast have to marginalize their losses.
There is no webcam lag, even PC webcams work just fine, and the reason why it can detect the motion of the wand real quick because the PS3 knows wtf to look for. A glowing ball. It can sense 3D by knowing the size of the ball and how much the ball gets larger/smaller as it gets closer/farther to the lense. Also, there are lots of cameras that can record at 120fps. It can go that fast because it lowers the recording resolution, allowing faster data transfers. At it’s highest res settings, cameras (recent ones) record around 30 fps, but like I said, as you lower the data transfer overhead, you higher the ability to capture more frames.
You are ignorant, this article is stupid, and sure, I will go to the hospital because you make my head hurt by your stupidity.
your fanboyism makes your head hurt because you say the Eye Camera has no lag like it’s a fact…
and as I said, if they just phased out the Eye of Judgement Bundle then it wouldn’t be a big deal…but they are phasing both of these items out…
and they don’t just go around phasing out peripherals unless there’s a new peripheral one way or another…
Like I said, they could be phasing it out for a NEW BUNDLE. Camera / Wand bundle. Also, how am I a fanboy? There is no noticeable lag on the PS Eye or any other modern camera for that matter. I’ve had one for 4 months and the only lag I experience is over the internet (I run DSL). What would you say the lag is between image from the camera to your screen. 8ms? hell, even 50ms, that’s not noticeable.
Concur with everyone else, you are technically ignorant and should not be writing articles on technology. The eye passes through uncompressed video at 60-120fps. It doesn’t do anything except pass the signal to the PS3 i.e. no processing that could cause a delay.
LOL, everyone here has said it and you won’t find any supporters to your guess unless they are as ignorant as you. The sphere on the motion controllers help it track 1:1, beyond that there is no lag in the camera anyways.
It’s funny that you think that those guys weren’t familiar with the camera when they’re the ones who created it.
You might as well delete this entire article/blog/whatever you want to call it as you will only be criticized for it.
Looks like this fake is a good example of poor journalism.
So I guess we could say that this article is based on your assumption. Which does have some logic to it. But it’s just an assumption.
It is assumed since SEARS is phasing out an item, Sony must be upgrading the PS eye. Yet, there is Bestbuy, Target, Walmart, Gamestop and a whole load of other retail stores that don’t have this item period, because it didn’t sell and it takes up retail space for other items they could sell.
To make a guess that a camera is being phased out by one store is a long stretch, but hey, if that’s the case, I guess your right. What company wouldn’t want to piss off it’s fan base and have them buy the same thing over again?
thanks for the response, but I actually work there and know their process of phasing items out…they don’t just go around phasing out accessories for big ticket items unless the console is outdated or there is a replacement…
and as I said before, they still have XBox and PS2 accessories…they would have phased those items out first before getting rid of something this recent…
this article is EPIC FAIL!
your not very bright are you? the whole point of that ball on the top of the controller isnt that it looks so cool…. it is a sensor ball that allows the camera to pick it up very easily. Kinda like the suits that have balls all over them for tracking motion when making games with human models… you should do homework before you make statements… that way instead of getting alot of volume for a few days and pissing everyone off, you can get a consistent amount of volume for having content worth investigating…
I hope you’re not getting paid for this utter crap.
what a ball scrathcer, dikhed\’
Hey yeah the guy at EB games told me there was a new one coming out when I enquired about the current one. I asked him if he was sure and he said he’d seen it and all. Apparently it’s wider and made to sit on hdtv’s better. I hope it does 720p video that’d be awesome!
The Don…you’re missing an integral part of the equation. Companies clearance product ALL the time and it has no weight on future products, but simply the fact that an account cannot move product. SEARS, of all places, shouldn’t be your source to forecast rumors and hardware changes. Sony has already stated that the the motion controller prototypes use the existing PS Eye camera accessory. They’re simply clearing out BOTH SKU’s to make room for new bundle offerings such as EyePet, hitting in November.
On the other side of the coin, peripherals are moved out to clearance for things as little as package design changes. It happens all the time. I would put more than good money on the fact that when you see the Motion Controller launch next year, it’s side-by-side AND bundled with the exact same camera we have now. If Dr. Richard Marks hadn’t said it himself “…this glowing sphere that the PlayStation Eye can track.”, I might believe you, however, he directly references EXISTING tech (the PlayStation Eye), not something forthcoming…and he continues to use it throughout his original E3′09 live tech demonstration.
Sorry, but your article simply falls apart on baseless theory.
look dude, the original PSeye records at 120 FPS. that is why there is no lag when tracking the controller’s orbs. and orbs are a lot easier to track than human bodies or cards like the ones used in eye of judgment, so that is why no new hardware is needed. sony have already clearly stated that this uses the existing pseye to work. do research next time before posting garbage like this.
The Don *A-hole*
You’ve got nothing to prove. You suck admit it.If they want to sell the eyecam then its because that they want to get more money as usual. That doesnt mean something new is coming up.Let’s say for example, they sell PS3 slim for 99$, does that mean something new is coming up or does that mean they are having a hard time trying to sell it?What i just explained is what proved that you are such a dumb retarded jackass to even create something stupid out of nowhere like this.
can anyone confirm that sears has the ps eye for selling at the prices stated?
it’s difficult to find the Eye at all, but I picked up Eye of Judgement which is a better deal regardless of the crappy game included considering it’s 5 bucks cheaper and you get more out of it..
k-mart also had all their ps eyes in clearance for 10 bucks…. i hope they dont phase it out cuz i hav had one since day one and still havent put it to good use
It sucks that chumps come and rag on you for stating a thesis eh don? man i can see dissagreeing, witch i happen to. but i never comment cuz suddenly i say something not quite right and suddenly im a stupid moronic ass whole. haha people get pretty serious with their blogs huh? I dont have any PS3 eye comments. though I was wondering why I got it so cheap. Plus, you dont suck, I read yhe whole thing and it makes sense to me.
not at all Dylan, I always encourage people to agree/disagree as long as they read the article…
you have to have thick skin to write even though we think of ourselves as more than just a “blog site”, but we’ll prove that more than talk about it…
and I appreciate you actually taking the time to read the article as there’s nothing worse than having someone come in and try to belittle your work based on the headline and 1st paragraph (or whatever you see on n4g)..
so as I said before….feel free to disagree because as long as you read the article, your response will reflect that and will be greatly appreciated at that…
