In Space No One Can Hear You Motion
Spring of next year will see Sony release it’s motion controller (SMC) and we may also see Microsoft’s Natal released in 2010. With both companies bidding to come with a good line up of launch titles, gathering first and third party developer support, what does one of the largest game publishers plan for these two platforms?
After a slow and shaky start, Electronic Arts has been making impressive efforts in different genres on the Wii, from exercise with EA Sports Active, puzzler Boom Blox and now Dead Space ExtrACTION!
GOTY Wii: Dead Space Extraction
Without question I give Dead Space Extraction (DSE) Game of the Year on Wii. It’s transition from third person to on-rails was made with good reason, allowing the Wii to maintain the claustrophobic feeling of the original without being hampered by the systems limitations (physics and graphics). The use of various accents, from South African to Indian, gives the Dead Space universe credibility that nations of Earth could work together to explore the deepest regions of space.
Like the original, part of the game is set on the USG Ishimura, with the most memorable locales given a Wii-working. The dismemberment is intact, holding the Wiimote gangster style for secondary fire, allowing for smooth transitioning when dealing with an onslaught of enemies. Upon finishing the game, I was left wanting more and the first thing I did was buy Dead Space again. Listen to this weeks podcast for more on what the broke gamers think of the original Dead Space.
How To Get Recognition For An Awesome Game
Early reports say that EA is disappointed with sales of DSE, even going as far as to blame consumers. The first marketing for the game I saw was on True Blood, after that at launch there was website advertising. DSE is a prequel to a game on different systems and it is a different genre, one that many gamers look down their nose at. I doubt that EA thought this game had much of a chance of selling well, but Visceral Games knew that on-rails was the best way to deliver the Dead Space universe onto the Wii over a period of little over a year.
In that regard, perhaps it has always been the intention to bring DSE to SMC and Natal, perhaps releasing it via PSN and XBLA. Or could the original Dead Space be getting a reworking like that for Resident Evil 5 Alternative Edition with DSE as additional content. Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition improved on an already brilliant game and I would love to experience Dead Space in a similar way.
Whatever may happen, I urge Wii owners that want a little more adult content this winter to look no further than Dead Space Extraction. For those that think of light gun / on-rails shooters with derogation, this is truly the Next Gen of the genre.

After playing DSE and FINALLY getting around to buying Dead Space for 360, I agree a transition to ps3 and 360 could do a great rail shooter justice. The nostalgia of DSE to the rails I played a kid made me feel awesome, actually shooting off the limbs with my own accuracy rather then a thumbstick. When the game made me jump, it literally effected my gameplay and I think EA should consider the opportunity of transferring over and improving such a great title.
Love the concept but do you really think that Dead Space Extraction is WI’’s GOTY? Surely you are forgetting about Muramasa, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Sports Resort, and Mad World.
Of the games I’ve played on Wii this year, it is GOTY without question
