LittleBigPlanet getting Batman DLC next?

This years Christmas gift from Media Molecule to us LittleBigPlanet fans, will be an update bringing water along with a timely collection of levels based upon the Pirates of the Caribbean film series.  The addition of water to LBP a year on is a good way of adding longevity to the creation of levels.

This is the second lot of Media Molecule levels available for download, following last years Metal Gear Solid DLC released around this time of year.  Like the MGS DLC’s paintinator, buy the PotC content and you can make levels with water, don’t buy it and you can still enjoy the levels with water made by others.  The content will be priced US$5.99/ €5.99/ £4.79/ AUS$9.95/ NZD$11.50.

LittleBigPlanet is for me the best game of 2008, I love coming back to it once in a while and checking out a puzzle level that someone has created.  The deciding factor for me buying LBP last Christmas was searching for The Shield and finding one level based on the greatest show of all time!

But what I always hoped for from LBP has still not come to fruition.  Much like PlayStation Home, I always thought that LBP would be used as a promotional outlet for films, TV, music and even other games.  True story: early 2009, a friend had been going on and on about how great Dead Space was, but it wasn’t until I played the LBP tribute, Little Dead Space by DarknessBear, that I went ahead and bought it.  For me there is no better advertisement than playing an LBP level that has clearly had a lot of care and attention put into it by a dedicated Author.  Word of mouth used to be the best form of promotion, now it is a 5 star LBP level!

At the moment like in Home when a film comes out and you can buy/get a t-shirt, LBP would similarly have a costume to wear.  One day and more importantly, like you will sometimes have a Home space, there would be official levels in LBP, (designing levels in LBP can’t take as much time and money as creating a Home space.)

Batman Arkham Asylum was an awesome game and thankfully Rocksteady studios will be expanding on their Batman videogame universe soon.  In the meantime it would be great if both UK based studios could collaborate on bringing another DLC pack to LBP based on Batman, perhaps released in the summer of 2010 to mark the anniversary of BAA.  It could have a new gameplay tool, grappling, with that special Media Molecule touch like the MGS DLC brought to levels based on BAA.

What I’d like to see more of is the use of LBP as a promotional tool for other products, there is no need for LBP to be viewed as an infringement on copyright.  I will be more willing to purchase something that changes the way I play rather than a costume, afterall it is much more fun to create your own in LBP, placing your own stamp on it.  The Ghostbusters DLC is an example of a missed opportunity, all MM had to do was make the Proton pack fireable, like the paintinator but with a  stream of paint and I’d have bought it.

Please leave suggestions for new tools you’d like to see in the comments below, try to link it with another form of media and the best idea will get a shout-out on this weeks podcast!
